Just listened to the Burke presser and I am happy that he thinks Johny hockey is special and he wants to surround those kinds of players with muscle or the "beef" as he put it.
Sven might not be going anywhere if he can start scoring in the AHL again. I think he will progress just fine and he will be a part of the future. I am fine with the move to the AHL for him, he just didn't seem to be strong enough to compete at the top level.
I wonder if things change for Monahan now with Burke in charge. I wonder if he goes down to the AHL as well.

Get over this. He hired Wilson once in Anaheim, but he fired him twice so I doubt he is bringing him here.

Been covered many times here
Monahan can't play in the AHL this year. It's either NHL or OHL

He also gave him a contract extension in Toronto.

It's quite possible to sign players' on other teams' RFA list which is what Calgary would've been doing. The order of events would've been as follows:
1) Calgary signs O'Reilly who is on another teams' RFA list to an offer sheet.
2) Once Colorado declines to exercise its right of first refusal the contract with Calgary takes effect and he is then transferred to the Flames in return for the compensation spelled out in the CBA.
3) That contract kicking in makes him subject to rule 13.23 which requires waivers, just as is the case with a UFA who signs with an NHL team after playing in Europe the same year.

But the MOU in effect at the time had different wording than the final CBA.

Except, and relevant to his current situation, Monahan can be sent to Abbotsford on a conditioning stint. But that is only short term (<2 weeks, iirc).

Burke says 'Save the tape" when he tells us he will not end up as the GM of the Calgary Flames

That is true. But only on a conditioning stint.

Even if they could do it, why send Monahan to the AHL? He's slowed down a bit in terms of scoring but he's still playing just fine.

I hope the new GM (or Burke) doesn't shake up the scouting team too much (more than it is already with Weisbrod being relieved). That has been seemingly improving every season.
Also, with the talk of Feaster going to the media threatening to do something, and not following through - his whole "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me" speech. Burke seems all Klingon:

The second part is highly debatable. Roy absolutely loves him as a player. Maybe "franchise player" was overstating it, but I'm sure there are plenty of teams that would happily give up a 1st and a 3rd for ROR, as long as that 1st wasn't 6th overall.

Wilson was long gone from Anaheim by the time Burke got there (by almost a decade). Wilson was in his third year as the coach in San Jose when Burke went to Anaheim.
Burke has hired 3 coaches in his career, Paul Holmgren (Hartford), Marc Crawford (Vancouver), and Randy Carlyle (Anaheim and Toronto).

Totally shocked...even more so than after we traded Iginla. I thought this was a rebuilding year. Burke wasn't happy being 14th? Considering our roster and injuries, there should have been no surprise there.

You're right and I'm still confident that it wouldn't have been enforced against the Flames ("the player" is not the same thing as "a player", regardless of what the final CBA says), but it's inexcusable if they really hadn't analyzed that language before making the offer, as taxbuster claims. I've always been a Feaster supporter, but his firing is understandable if that's true.

As started in teh first 10% of this thread (easy to miss in a big thread)..... Feaster's time was ticking down half a year ago. Today's actions are just going through the nessasary due dilligence of transitioning management. His firing has nothing to do with this years standings, it has to do with last years (notably, but also previous yearsS) bad management.

Very happy Feaster and Weisbrod are out.
I couldn't handle any more of their "we know something nobody else in the league does" attitude in regards to signings/drafts

Well, you'd be correct if it was not even close to a lottery pick, but it was.
He isn't a Franchise player. Period.
It still remains to be seen if he'll have the offensive ability to be a good 1st line player. I'm not saying he isn't a good player. He was just clearly misrepresented by Jay.

Honestly more than anything else, that bothered me the most.
I wonder if this is what was alluded to when it was said Weisbrod is not very well liked in the NHL......

Haven't read the whole thread yet but agreed. Just weird timing. Would have expected it after last year.
