Jay Feaster History
Well my tests are over but am not leaving town for a couple more days so I had some time to kill. Some of the format might not be consistent but I'm watching netflix on the other screen so I might have drifted
Every player transaction from December 28, 2010 when he became ‘Acting GM’ until this morning. I left out unsigned UFAs and waiver moves that didn't amount to anything (i.e. unclaimed). If there are notable UFA non-signings that you think should be added (or anything at all that should be added) as well as anything wrong, be sure to point it out.
The end of an era

Given that body of work...... anybody think Feaster gets another GM job in the NHL?

Given the body of work from his previous job he shouldn't have even gotten this one.

The Robyn Regehr deal, ugh. Not much there that stands out as great or even good. Most is totally forgettable.

I recall when he was signed on by the Flames full time, he argued that his trading history in Tampa was marred by owner interference.
Not sure if that's the case or not. The Regehr trade shows off as a loss for him, but moving floating, lazy Bourque for anything was a win. Then came trading for Smid.

My take on this:
Wins: Erixon trade, drafting (2011 draft looks golden, getting Gillies in 2012 3rd round, 2013 first round), some value pickups (Stempniak/Blair Jones/McGrattan/Galiardi/Russell/Colborne)
Losses: Most of the big trades (Regehr/Iginla/Bouwmeester/Tanguay). Some questionable signings from Europe (Cervenka/Karlsson/Ramo)
I remember when we hired Feaster the big worry was his draft history with TB. He seems to have done well here with the possible exception of Jankowski and if Baertschi's development has completely stalled. Where he fell apart was in getting value from our big trading pieces. I don't think he'll have a problem getting another job at some point.

Trades: So he won a few small ones, but lost all the big trades?
Drafting: I think it was in a April 2013 article where Feaster says he actually doesn't really watch amateur games. He never watched Johnny before he was drafted. He said he never watched Jankow when Jankow was drafted. If we want to give Feaster credit for drafting, its that we credit him for letting his employees (scouts) do their job. Which if thats what makes a good GM, where can I submit my resume?

I find it hard to give Feaster credit for doing well on a trade he would not have made and did not want to make under normal circumstances. Sather had him over a barrel the entire time.

As bad as the body of work is, that wasn't even the worst part for me.
The ROR fiasco and the not even knowing that Cervenka wasn't a centre was embarrassing. And being embarrassed to be a Flames fan sucks.
Also I hated the way he conducted himself in interviews and at the STH meetings. He is infallible in his own mind.
Worst GM in Flames history. By quite a wide margin.

Maybe. It doesn't strike me as a bad actual body of work given the individual circumstances. I could see an expansion team hiring him.

The ROR fiasco, in and of itself, was more then enough for ANY GM in this league to be fired on the spot, let alone one that had a very poor track record both with his current team and with his last team.
I am not going to say he didn't have a few (small) wins: the Smid trade, the Cammi trade, both wins IMO, even if not home runs. The Monahan pick was nice, though it was a pretty tough pick to screw up. The Erixon trade seems to have worked out OK, even though it is still kind of early to judge that one. But all in all, the good did not outweigh the bad and clearly Burke agrees with that assessment.

As far as Feaster's Wins are concerned, I would list in best to worst:
Hudler signing
Russell for 5th
Galiardi for 4th
Colbourne for 4th
Erixon for Horak+2 2nd
Stempniak for Langkow
Cammalleri + Ramo for Bourque + Holland + 2nd

I am so happy with the new direction. I feel bad for Jay but he was not a good GM. Made the Flames look foolish a few times but wasn't all bad. I am glad the guy that ran this team to the ground is not doing the rebuild
