do you do it? According to the thoughts of many here, you just stole from Walmart if you do.
I question your morals and ethics good sir

Couldn't you just re-gift the DVDs?

If I knew exactly where she bought it- I would try to return it there. I actually have gone into Walmart unsure where something was bought- first to verify the UPC and then with the item. However I started with- I got this as a gift. I'm not sure if my mom bought it here or somewhere else....
At that point- being honest I haven't had Walmart refuse the return. However my biggest point is that I didn't lie; and let the store decide.

Like so many things in our society, they are technically covered under our criminal code but it's not worth their while to actually investigate and prosecute petty instances like this. In university, I used to work for Alberta Justice and the Bar Association doing admin and paralegal stuff (convinced me to not become a lawyer lol) and I do recall cases where "repeat customers" were arrested and prosecuted for continuously perpetrating return fraud.
For anybody who is afraid of admitting to dumb things they did when they were a kid (shoplifting, etc.), don't worry. IIRC, you are protected by the statute of limitations.

I have a question for the morality police.
In September I wanted to buy my girlfriend a KitchenAid stand mixer for her birthday.
London Drugs had red and orange ones for $299 and Canadian Tire had about 9 colours (including red and orange), and white ones all for $349. At this time I was unaware of Canadian Tire's price match policy.
Exact same model number, SKU number, etc., everything was the same except for the colour and the price.
I purchased the London Drugs red one for $299, took it to Canadian Tire and said, "I bought this stand mixer at another store and that store did not have a white one, I was wondering if I could trade it with you guys for a white one? I do not have a receipt."
They did it no problem.
Essentially they traded a white stand mixer for a red one, I didn't see the harm in it but I still for some reason felt kind of bad.

Choosing a white one instead of a red one is where your integrity should be called in question.

If I read this right, you did a full disclosure to the store on where it was purchased. In my opinion, any decision the store made after that is a call they can make.

Not quite, he did not disclose that he purchased it at London Drugs, but instead simply said another store.

So were you trying to be sneaky when you said "another store", hoping they would assume you meant another Canadian Tire? Or were you being genuine and not trying to deceive when you said "another store"?

That's right, my intention was for them to assume I meant another Canadian Tire store. I was hoping they wouldn't ask, because if they did, I would have said London Drugs and they probably would not have allowed the exchange. But they never asked.
If I was being totally forthright I would have just said "I purchased it at London Drugs and they didn't have the colour I wanted" and I also wouldn't have said, "I don't have a receipt." Because I did have a receipt, it just wasn't a Canadian Tire one.

I don't have as much of an issue with Malcolm's exchage. It was an exchange- not a return. So the store still has the same amount of inventory, and isn't out any additional cash or product. Plus there was more disclosure about how it wasn't bought there.
