What disheartens me about this move is it continues the carousel of off-ice personnel moves. So now Burke picks his GM - does the GM like the coach we have, or does he predictably hire his own guy? Whe his own guy gets hired, does he like the player mix we have? Or does that cause conflict and help contribute to on-ice player moves? Does the new GM even like the player mix we have, or concentrate on putting his own stamp on the team? And then if executives or owners don't like the direction, how long until they press the reset button on Burke, thereby restarting the carousel once again?
All of this evaluating, assesing, and transforming involves tearing down and rebuilding, but doesn't really get you anywhere. Feaster was the GM for years, but I would argue that he's only had about 18 months to put together the tean he wants, given direction from ownership/executuves and the roster he inherited loaded with NTCs, NMCs, and so on. The new GM will spend time undoing what Feaster has done as he tries to also starts to shape his own vision of the team. How long from now does that take? How long from the date the new GM is hired does that take? Does Burke make moves in the meantime?
It all just seems counter-productive. You can argue that Feaster was the wrong man for the rebuild, and I can understand that. But when a move like this is made, it just setsa back the rebuild a number of months, and possibly seasons, as the new people hit the rest button and start from scratch.
I'm just not convinved this does more than just prolongs what was already shaping up to a be a slow, painful rebuild.
Sorry for the rambling.

We shouldn't keep people to prevent a carousel when they're bad people.

Well, Hertl is complete hindsight though, so not exactly fair. Ceci would work too.

The rebuild just began so I don't buy any of this "setting the rebuild back" talk. We are already at the back and there's only one direction from here and that's forward. There isn't yet a young core of players on the big team and there's still a lot of transition to do with this year's team. Sounds like Burke didn't want Feaster handling guys like Cammalleri, Sempniak, Stajan, etc at the deadline based on last years returns. IMO this is all positive.

So Howse was the type of player Burke would covet? Not committed and apparently not real bright.
One of the keys to living a happy, successful life is having the ability and willingness to see yourself as you are. Probably not a lot of mirrors in Howse's place.

You don't keep the AGM around after you fire the GM, unless you're going to promote from within. The new GM will pick his own assistant if he wants one. Also, if Weisbrod is the hockey mind behind Feaster, and Burke didn't like the results, then it's another reason for Weisbrod to go.
So I don't mind really. Feaster was getting average results, and we need better than that. His trades especially have been bad.
I think this is not a bad time for a new GM to come in, so we might actually be an attractive spot. Expectations are as low as they can be for a Canadian team, there's finally some prospects in the system, basicly no untouchable veterans on the team except maybe Gio... Should be a good place for an ambitious GM... Unless you count working under Burke as a problem.
That said, I have very little faith in us bringing in a guy that's any better than Feaster. I generally have not liked our hirings.

Trying to decide what I think of the deal and at the end of the day... meh.
I like the core of what these team is becoming, I think one of our two goalies is going to turn into a solid number one and I think Feaster has done a reasonable to downright good job since the O'Reilly screw up. Writing was pretty much on the wall when Burke was hired though.
That said, through this all if it results in Chris Butler getting traded, I'm good with it. With the handling of Sven and Butler getting prime ice time, I'm about ready for Hartly to get sent out of town.

Howse has exactly what Burke craves. Size. But probably not the kind of size Burke means.

You sure? Howse follows the Dustin Penner offseason training regime.

@SNHockeyCentral Brian Burke tells @timandsid he is prepared to take over as GM of Flames if he can't find the right candidate.

Bugger. Hopefully they're just exploring all their options and not seriously considering this. He was downright horrible in Dallas.

What?! This is really shocking. And kind makes me nervous... Gives the impression that he wanted Feaster to make some kind of move/trade but Feaster refused and there was no budging from either side. Please... PLEASE don't trade baertschi Burke.
