The Leafs CEO didn't vote for the new tv contract. Damien Cox wrote that "it's not clear whether he was going to be forced to vote against the deal at the NHL board level before Bettman interceded and suggested that an abstention would save MLSE and the NHL embarrassment." http://www.ourwindsor.ca/opinion-story/4266499-leafs-stun-nhl-by-refusing-to-approve-new-tv-deal/

Someone suggested it earlier in the thread, but having those two "divorce" their partnership with one of the networks getting the Leafs, and the other a second Toronto franchise would be a good way for this to end.

It looks like CRTC is going to be looking at the Rogers deal.
Quote:
Rogers Communications' $5.2-billion NHL broadcasting deal could draw regulatory action from the CRTC, rating agency Moody's says.
In a report released Thursday, Moody's noted it's unclear how Rogers plans to “distribute and monetize” NHL games, so that the cost implications for Canadian consumers are yet to be seen.
“Despite the Canadian Government’s support of free markets, should Rogers’ plans adversely affect consumers, regulators will respond,” the ratings agency said.
|
Quote:
As part of the deal, Rogers inked a side pact to sublicense some Saturday games and other rights to CBC and Quebecor's French-language TVA network.
While Rogers may announce further sub-licensing agreements, the Moody’s report speculated that Rogers will maintain “proprietary distribution solely to its own subscribers” for certain games, which “could have regulatory implications.”
|
Quote:
The Rogers agreement could also spur CRTC regulations because of other changes taking place in the Canadian broadcasting sector, the report said, such as the federal government’s pledge to explore “pick-and-pay viewing and wireless roaming changes.”
In an email to CBC News, CRTC spokesman Guillaume Castonguay said: “The acquisition of broadcast rights is a contractual matter between broadcasters and third parties (such as sports leagues). It is not something that the CRTC gets involved in.”
However, Castonguay added that if the agency receives a complaint raising concerns that a company is in violation of CRTC regulations, it will “investigate and act as required.”

When did the CRTC become this 'friend of the consumer' org?

Gord Miller @GMillerTSN 3m
After 23 years and a lifetime worth of memories at TSN, I'm excited to announce that I've made an important decision about my future:
Expand
Gord Miller @GMillerTSN now
I've agreed to a long-term extension to remain at TSN, where I've wanted to be all along. Looking forward to exciting times ahead!
Well, there goes one guy off of the TSN talent list that would make the jump over to SN.

Interesting. I thought they'd keep one of Miller or Cuthbert, but I thought it would be Cuthbert.
I wonder if Rogers will go hard after Cuthbert now? It would be a chance for him to get back on HNIC, and possibly call the Stanley Cup Finals.

I don't understand why a Play by Play guy would stay loyal.

I don't know why TSN would keep both. All they've got is the CFL... do you really need/want two high priced guys for that? You could put them on the regional broadcasts they do have... but have to think they are more expensive than the typical regional guy (I assume Kerr gets paid in Animal Crackers)

I think with Hughson's history with Rogers in the past that he'll remain their number one guy. But I would prefer Cuthbert myself.

Cuthbert better not stay. His talents should not be wasted calling only CFL games.
I don't want another Gary Thorne situation here.

So TSN has locked up Duthie, MacKenzie, and now Miller. What are they going to be doing outside of December 26th to about January 10th I don't know.

From my understanding HNIC will eventually be absorbed into SN.
I was speaking of TSN talent.

Miller has and could call CFL games. Rod Black is toast.
