Last week I had terrible abdominal pain, no appetite, and threw up. Assuming it was stomach flu, I told my husband to sleep in the guest room so he wouldn't get my germs. I was all alone and in pain for hours, not sleeping a lot. My husband got me to call Healthlink eventually, which I agreed to do as I'm also 8 weeks pregnant and knew I was dehydrated and should probably have an IV and some nutrition getting into me. The Healthlink nurse advised me to go to the ER even though I think we both just suspected stomach flu - but when you are pregnant and have abdominal pain of any kind, I think their system tells you to get checked out ASAP.

It turned out to be appendicitis, and it was already perforated. My baby and I could both have easily died, and quickly. Maybe when I was lying in our room all alone in pain. I'm still getting over the shock of it.

Anything can happen. We have to do our best to enjoy the now. I'm glad you're okay Hesla - don't beat yourself up about your choices.

I also drove to Strathmore that morning, out of dedication to my customers. Of course they told me I was crazy and should just go home, which I was able to do safely. Next time I'm just going to stay home and not worry about how much money I'm not making. It's really not that important.

I forgot you were Billdong. I was witness to your drunken anti-squirrel ranting too. Small world.

Wow, Hesla, I know I wouldn't have made that decision, I would have kept going and hoped for the best.

Sounds like you have a lot of.......patients.

Glad to hear that you are okay. It can be a traumatic experience for sure and it's good to talk about it.

About 3 years ago I was getting off the highway, got to the top of the off ramp where there was a yield sign. An older man was going to let me in but I waved him to go ahead of me. About 5 minutes later we are driving along and someone blows through a stop sign onto our road causing a car coming towards us to swerve, lose control and get T-boned by the man I let in front of me. It was a 90km/h zone so it was pretty horrific. I locked up my brakes (no ABS) and came within a foot of rear ending him. I threw the car in park, my partner called 911, and I checked on him first. Smoke/steam was pouring out of his car and he was screaming that he couldn't feel his legs. Then I ran up and check on the old woman that he T-boned. Her head was hanging out of her window and blood was pouring onto the road. I thought for sure that she was dead. Thankfully an off duty RCMP was coming the other direction and took over the scene. He had me go back to the man in the car and have him turn off the ignition. He then wanted me to find his cell phone so he could call his wife.

It took quite a while to feel myself again after this, although I still think of it. I would have the craziest dreams every night and couldn't get the image of the woman out of my head. She looked terrified just as she was about to get hit. I came to find out from the RCMP that she somehow survived but needed a lot of surgery. The man I let in front of me broke both his legs.

After the incident for several weeks I became more withdrawn and felt alone as I kept replaying the scene over and over again in my head. It wasn't until one day I was sitting on the front step of my house and some birds were singing up a storm that something clicked in my head and pulled me back from it all.

It wasn't long after that I bought a safer car with AWD, ABS and lots of airbags, to this day I grip the wheel tighter when I drive through the area, and I always keep the birds well fed.

Saw this and thought of the thread - be safe folks!

http://calgary.ctvnews.ca/northbound...rash-1.1581615

An early afternoon crash on Deerfoot Trail has claimed the life of one man.

At about 12:40 p.m., the driver of a vehicle travelling northbound on Deerfoot Trail lost control of his vehicle and left the road. The driver, a 46-year-old male, exited his vehicle to assess the damages and was hit when a second vehicle slid off the highway.

Drove down from Red Deer to Calgary today. Left lane looked really slick while the right lane looked kinda dry and much better to drive on but still slow (around 80-100 kmh). Wasn't in a hurry and this thread did cross my mind (choices we make), stayed in the right lane all along, took longer to get home but saw around 10 cars in the ditch off the left lane.

It is as small as that. Slow down folks and be careful.

Glad you're ok Hes.

It's weird the decisions we make and how they affect our lives. Not to hijack a thread but I had a previous marriage before my current one. I was young and so was she and because I thought I was "the man" I always thought I should be driving. Well it was the day after my 23rd Birthday and we were set to drive home from her family's house after a birthday weekend with friends. She insisted that she drive the birthday boy home. I tried to argue but to no avail. Sadly on that fateful trip home we were t-boned by a lady who ran a stop sign trying to cross the highway. We were going 70MPH at the time and our car war airborne and spinning. Both my first wife and I were ejected from the vehicles. The decision to drive the birthday boy home spared my life but cost my 1st wife hers.

I still think about this 8 years later and try to understand why that decision was made. Life is a crazy thing eh?
