Butler is a marginal NHL defenseman playing on a bad defensive team. I find it ridiculous that he absorbs as much criticism as he does for these circumstances that are really beyond anyone's control. The bottom line is that there MAY BE one or two players currently in the Flames system who can do Butler's job, but in the end it WILL NOT make any perceptible difference to the Flames in the standings this season, nor in the long run.

I also want to add that IMO I rather have the Flames' d prospects playing in the AHL and learning the defensive game at a slower pace then throwing them into the faster paced NHL. In Abby they will learn better habits and when the game becomes easy for them there, then they can come up to the NHL.
It's year 1 of the rebuild, Butler is UFA this year. I say they extend Russell and Calgary goes into next season with a top 6 of Wideman, Gio, Brodie, Smid, Russell, and SOB

Since this is a rebuild year and I'm sure Feaster is planning in trading butler, I imagine he wants Hartley will play him more hoping he'll put together a good stretch of games to increase his trade value. There's at least a chance if that happening cause he has had stretches where he has played well... If he was just sat and used as an extra defenseman, there is no chance of his trade value increasing.

I would rather see them in the A as well. What I would like to see is a replacement for Butler. But between Butler and the prospects, I would rather watch Breen.

So they look to make excuses as to why things haven't gone as they thought so far, and will likely continue to do so until things actually do work out, or all hope is truly lost.
One thing about the Oilers rebuild though that can't be denied is that at least up front, their prospects are playing the "key" roles for their club. That is not the case on mass in Calgary. When healthy, you can argue Monahan is playing a key forward position for us! but other than that it's simply not the case. Roles being played by Hall, Eberle, RNH are being played by vets down here, like Cammy, Stajan and Stempniak. I think the Oilers have gone too young, so you ca argue which style is better, but you can't argue that the Oilers key positions are being held down my much younger players than in Calgary at this point in the rebuild, something that has to reflect positively for them in regards to how close they are to competing.

Out of the Oilers young players, the only one that you can argue is looking the bit like a first round draft choice and possible future game changer is Hall.
Sure you've got Yakapov, Eberle and RNH playing in key roles and not being great at it. Yakapov when he's not disinterested is avoiding hits at the worst time, RNH and Eberle look like one dimensional small players.
Justin Schultz in any roll is just a disaster.
Part of that of course is playing for a club with no depth and little help on the way. But another part is that RNH and Eberle got overhyped because of their draft position.
Hall is probably going to be very good for the Oilers if he survives.
but other then that the other big players while putting up numbers have a direct responsibility in the Oilers lack of success because they can't thrive in those roles as you stated.

Hall is the worst for backchecking, and makes the stupidest mistakes. Maybe he'll develop and apps that things, but RNH is far smarter and actually backchecks

Agreed. I honestly believe hall is the forward version of phaneuf. I think they are players who were hyped a lot and have enough skills to be used as top players but they will always be prone to stupid mistakes and have poor attitudes for players that are expected to be leaders.

I talk to my brother via WhatsApp during the oilers games and he's an oilers fan. Our conversation consists of:
-see? Hall just gave it away with a stupid backhand pass to no one
-see? Hall just toe dragged into three of the passing players and turned over the puck
-see? Hall is not in your screen as the puck goes in the oilers net. Ever

Love the comments from the Edmonton Sun....

Appropriate ending … no doubt the Flames deserved the two points …. here they were on the road in the 2nd game of a back-to-back, minus top players like Monahan, Wideman & Glencross & with their team battling a flu bug & having four fewer power plays they still managed to outwork & out heart all that skill we keep hearing about on the Oil.

Get tired of Eakins and his post game. He sounds like he should be an instructor at a Howie Meeker hockey school. Hey Dallas, how many games before your system takes affect?
