Butler overall isn't as terrible as some people say but he sure does make 1-3 boneheaded plays that basically negate any good he does in any given game. I don't think he is a flame next year so a new whipping boy can be crowned

Thats the thing. Russell i think didn't clear the zone 20 seconds earlier when he had a chance. It's when Butler makes a mistake the puck is always in the back of our net. EVERY SINGLE TIME! It would be comical if he was a player on another team.

Butler needs one of the young guys, like Blair jones, to show him how to clear the freaking puck out of the zone. Mother of God but he is terrible at that. Like, I can smell how much he reeks at it through the TV. Brutal.

My dislike of 'Butts' on this board is not new. For whatever reason Hartley, if you feel compelled to play him..... do not do so with less than two minutes to go in the game!!!!
I can think of three games so far this year that this human un-highlight reel has cost us the game.
Knock it off!!!
That is all

I know. It's like any time he has the puck on his stick and about to clear the zone his hands turn into 12 year old girl hands and he has no power whatsoever on the clearing attempt and it could be telegraphed from Mars.
His hockey IQ is low. It's too bad because he does a lot of little things right in between his frequent stupid plays.

I would say he's in the running for one of the worst d-men the Flames have ever iced, but then I remember watching guys like Cale Hulse, Anders Eriksson, David Hale, and Andrei Zyuzin who were just as bad or worse. Not to mention we can go way back to the likes of Igor Kravchuk, Wade Belak, and Glen Featherstone.
So I dunno, it's a bit of a tossup. I'm pretty sure he's the worst we've had playing any sort of major role since Todd Simpson though.

Was tied for second worst in nhl going into tonight at -15.
Let's hope the rash of injuries to d make someone desperate enough to try him on.

"Let's supplement our losses on the back end by adding literally the worst NHL defender we can possibly find"
The NHL is a place where this would actually happen.

The hate is laughable.
Any other dman and people wouldn't even bat an eye. Plays like that happen countless times every game, Hemsky made a good play on his backhand to keep the puck in.
Butler needed to make a stronger play but other dmen made just as "brutal" plays to clear even earlier in the same sequence.
Butler is what he is, a 5/6 d-man that can be serviceable but in over his head in top 4 minutes.
Something about this fanbase and the constant need for a whipping boy though.
