The insane popularity of a single sweatshirt has forced its maker to expand into four new factories within the last year just to meet the soaring demand.
The zip-up hoodie, made by San Francisco startup American Giant, costs $89. It had been on the market for 10 months when a December 2012 Slate article declared it "the greatest hoodie ever made" and suddenly sales exploded.

The pace of growth was so rapid that backorder waits grew to as long as four months. But people continued placing orders regardless of the wait.

edit: actually, reading that article makes me hope this company continues its success. It sounds like it locally makes a quality product at a reasonable price and is being rewarded for it. Good for them.

From the video, it's made in the USA but it looks like their factory is still full of Asians doing the sweatshop sewing.

Looks nice enough, but no way would I spend $100+ on a hoodie without trying it on first.
I still haven't found anything that fits (me) better than the American Apparel hoodies. Although I'm not entirely sure what planet their sizes are from.

That was before it was mass produced though. When demand goes up quality normally goes down. My lululemon hoodie has served me well for 5 years of wearing it a ton. It was made in China or somewhere over seas so I guess the quality sucks compared to the good ol US of A! Now I really want to try one and see the difference. Also it is easy to say "it will last a life time" what happens when it doesn't?
