They should arm the drivers with a giant pad of post it notes. He can just jot down a little message like "please have bin closer to curb" or "bin was backwards". Stick it to the top of the bin and the people get the message first time.
I bet that 95% of people will have complete comprehension within two or three weeks. And the losers that take offense to being corrected, well, drivers with regular routes will start to recognize their childish non cooperation and just not pick up their bin.

Before I switched to an open box truck I'd always just leave my empties by the dumpster for the bums. No way I'm putting a nasty garbage bag full of drippy beer and pop cans inside my vehicle.

I think people actually get in trouble if they don't comply. One day I left out a garbage bag that was supposedly heavier than 45kg and got a nice notice on my door about our garbage pickup bylaws.

Won't someone please think of the homeless? Seriously though...there are a pair of extremely hard working and kind old men in Sunnyside that pick up bottles form the back alleys. One of them is retired and does it to supplement his income and says he makes a killing doing it. $30 was never worth my time to go to the bottle depot so he provided a great service to me while always being incredibly respectful. I hope this does not cut in to his bottom line!
As for the idea, I do think it's great. Our garbage consists solely of beer bottles, pizza boxes, cereal boxes and milk jugs... Now I can just throw it all in the same bin and not feel guilty! That said, I can't help but feel the automated trucks are already a huge failure. The back lane in my alley is used heavily for parking and I think it's going to be extremely difficult to find enough space on a consistant basis for the bins. A second worker is a lot more agile than a giant automated arm...
Edit: Another thought... My parents alley way is narrow, no more then 12ft. in places (maybe less). If the bins have to be 1 foot away from fences and the bins themselves look to be 2 ft. deep and their is garbage collection (bins) on each side of the alley how is the truck that is surely wider than 6ft. going to fit down the alley? This wasn't an issue for Garbage trucks because garbage bags are typically placed in enclosures on the residents property but these bins have to be in the open blocking the alley.... Hell 6ft. isn't even wide enough for a Truck/SUV or even a car with a bad driver!

Blue bins are now super sized! (Optional)
Quote:
Super-sized blue carts are on the way for recycling-hungry Calgary households.
Calgary is testing a 360-litre recycling bin for families who have found the standard 240-litre cart filled up too quickly in a week.
The large version is slightly taller and much deeper. But they’re just as wide, which means the automatic arms of city recycling trucks should be able to pick them up just like the standard format.

And here I've been taking all of our extra recycling to one of the depots like a chump.

I would jump all over this, except that I don't think it would fit in the little area that we have worked out for our blue and black bins beside our deck.

It is surprising. I always forget that when I go home, then feel the guilt as I toss a can in the garbage.

I want smaller black bins. The thing is almost always 80% empty and takes up a lot of alley space, and I need room for a green bin when that shows up.

That's why you fill your neighbor's blue bin first before you start filling your own

Move to cochrane we have tiny black bins and full size blue. I really miss the big black bin that I could put anything inside of

I really hope this doesn't give them an excuse to up the fees again. Living by myself, I actually hardly use either blue or black bins. If it wasn't for the fact that I need to clear out my garbage bin once a week, it'd honestly take me about 4 weeks to fill either bin.
