I'm a big fan of the Tacoma. Its big enough without being too big, it will tow (within reason) and it's built like a Toyota...
I'd encourage you to look seriously look at it.
I had a friend with a Titan and he couldn't get out of it fast enough...he bought a Tacoma and loves it

+1 on the Tacoma
You can get it in a manual transmission and you could add a TRD supercharger to crank up the awesomness

When it comes to trucks, buy domestic, and 2-3 years old.
Used import full sized trucks are ridiculously priced, and they simply aren't as tough as the American stuff, period.
There are so many low mileage, never left pavement, mint condition soccer dad, domestic half tons in this city, it makes no sense to buy a new one for twice the price. If you can find a nice pre-owned Ford Ecoboost V6, I would recommend that. Every single person I know that owns one, absolutely raves about them. And that turbo engine has MASSIVE tune ability for super cheap. Just software adds tons of horsepower.

Want a truck but don't want a domestic? I third the Tacoma recommendation.
If you'd consider a domestic, if buying new I reccomend the '14+ Silverado/Sierra. If buying used, I second the Ecoboost recommendation

Would you be doing any towing? Buying new or used?

What size truck are you looking for? You'll want something with a bit more grunt than a 1/2 ton if you'll be getting a fifth wheel, iirc correctly the lightest one you could get is a touch over 11000lbs

That's the thing, domestic cars are usually pretty bad. But domestic trucks, for most people, are the way to go. Yeah Tacoma's are neat, but most owners that actually use their truck, as a truck, find it too limited and underpowered.
As long as you follow regular service intervals, the domestic stuff is indestructible. My dad has a 2003 Ram 1500 Hemi Quad cab with 130,000kms that has crossed the continent 3 times with a fully loaded down 28 foot loaded Holiday trailer, and all it has ever needed is a power steering pump. But he is anal about maintenance and having the right equipment, like a heavy duty tranny cooler etc.
This is how I would personally rank Trucks from what I see in the business.
If I was going gas V8, I would buy a Dodge. The Hemi Engines seem to be bullet proof.
If I was going V6, definitely the Ford Eco-Boost just based on owner feedback.
If I was going Heavy Duty, Ford Super Duty Powerstrokes are legendary for being tough as nails.
If it was just style I was looking at, I will admit, the Tundra is Beautiful truck, with almost Lexus level fit and finish inside.
But at the end of the day, I would be probably trying to find a low mileage 7 or 8 year old Dodge Ram 1500 quad Hemi. They can be had for next to nothing if you are patient. And unlike a 7 or 8 year old performance car, they Trucks change very little over the years. Any 8-10 year old V8 truck is still gonna have 300+ HP and the same essential features and functionality of a new one. If I buy a truck I am going to use it as such, and I would rather it have a few years of dings and scratches on it so it wouldn't bug me to add a few of my own.

Can't go wrong with a Hemi, just a shame the rest of the truck seems to fall apart around it. Back seats seemed cramped when I was lookng at them this summer, not sure I'd want to be fighting with a car seat back there

I appreciate all the feedback and info. This is great!
Gotta make sure I get some truck-nuts for it to! LOL!

But honestly, I am just giving an opinion. I am admittedly biased to Dodge trucks a bit because we have one in the family that has been bullet proof. That and the Hemi engines are pretty gnarly in an unrefined sort of way, and I like my V8's lumpy, rough and tumble. There is no perfect answer. All I would say is, if you plan to tow a holiday trailer of any sort of size, you are limiting yourself with a Tacoma. You will pay a lot more, for a far less capable Machine. If you plan to just us it as a grocery getter and the occasional home depot trip, heck, even a Ridgeline would be a great choice.

There is a reason they sell about a billion F-150's every year, they are great vehicles. I always buy 2-3 years old, if you look around you can get a 3 year old truck with about 50K for a little over half price. Of course that is dealer wholesale so you need to do some haggeling.

Also, make sure you test drive what you are interested in, different brands of trucks drive totally differently. It's literally night and day between Chevy and Ford.

And there is this as well. Ford in my opinion has surpassed some of the Japanese and even us (VW) in fit, finish and quality over the last 6-7 years. Our parts manager drives a Raptor, holy shart is that a wicked truck. I think it's like 60k or something, but it is amazing.

I bought a ford f150 with ecoboost. Love the truck. I was seriously considering the ram but I got a decent deal on the ford so I went with that. The toyotas are nice but outdated. A full size domestic gets better mileage than the Tacoma and has way more power. The Tacoma only has 6400lbs towing capacity and an ecoboost with towing package has 11300lbs.

**All 2010 or newer**
Ford seems to be all the rave these days. I personally haven't driven one.
Dodge has nuts, and they finally stepped up their interior in 2013. This is my current work truck, and I like it.
Toyota. I wouldn't do it. Have never owned one, but know guys who have and the reviews aren't that great.
Chev/GM. Doesn't seem like the snazzy choice these days, but I love the "AUTO" option available. Dodge and Ford don't have this. AWD in the city, while still able to turn a corner.
My personal ranking:
1. Ford (I'm basing this off of hype alone, as I haven't owned/driven one)
2. Chev/GM
3. Dodge
