With the timing of his injury I think it is much more likely that he will play for Canada at the WJHC this year. He will likely be coming back as soon as the tournament is ready to start and it will be a good opportunity for him to get back to speed.

In the lead-up to the draft last year I was concerned that all of Monahan's goals seemed like garbage goals, in the sense that he'd whack it in from right in front of the net and the crease. I was a bit worried he wouldn't be able to translate that game to the pros because he wouldn't have as much space to work in front of the bet. Boy was I wrong!
His shooting precision (both goals against the Coilers last night, for example) is really impressive. He plays a simple game and makes it look really easy, but the boy's got game!
Many players that are known for scoring (Ovechkin, Crosby, Stamkos, Kane, Iginla, etc.) are known for a patented move. For example Ovechkin will beat you with a blasted one-timer meant to go through the twine. Crosby/Kane will beat you 9 ways till sunday by dooping and dangling.
Sean Monahan though, to me, is like the exact opposite of both those styles. He shoots slow, and never deaks or dangles. Just a slow, precision accurate shot. It looks so easy and effortless and must annoy the hell out of any goalie that he beats.
It's unbelievable how seemless this kid's transition has been. I mean this kinda of play was expected out of MacKinnon who has a plethera of more talented, younger players to play with as well and yet Monahan finds himself just 5 goals behind with a lesser supporting cast. Give him some finishers and his 8 assists this year are more like 18 assists and the fact that he is just at 4 pims on the season shows how mature his game is already at just 19 years old. I can't wait till Gaudreau comes up, the comparison to Toews/Kane with these two seems a bit far-fetched but I honestly could see both these players turn into a combo with that kind of impact. I can't wait to see the moves Burke makes over the next few days and I'm hoping we see Monahan play with a bit more skill down the stretch if Burke is able to manufacture a solid hockey trade.

I scored 2 goals tonight and everyone was very happy. Joe Colborne said I'm glad you have 17 goals and I said actually Joe it's now 18.
I sincerely hope this twitter account follows him throughout his career.

Today we beat USA for the gold medal. Jonathan Toews asked me what else I wanted to do and I said I wanted him to autograph it, so he did.

Gio passed me the cup and told me it's okay if I wanted to cry. I asked why would you want to cry Mark, that's what people do when they're sad. I was very happy to lift the cup over my head so I didn't cry.

The best part is that he does so many of the little things that are already impressive... He wins battles along the boards against bigger, stronger veterans that are often top players. He's already improving in the face-off dot. He has an NHL quality shot. He has a strong defensive game. He's super mature, well spoken, and humble. He's committed to constantly improving (for example, he went and trained over the break instead of going to cancun or something).
Now you take all those qualities and think about the fact he's only 19 and has room to improve. He's going to get stronger on the puck than he already is. His speed should improve. He's going to get line mates with higher-end skill. His shot will be even better. His confidence to make plays will keep going up. This is just the beginning folks.
