There were comments when announcing this about embracing broadband and a la carte. With the move to more a la carte offerings in Canada http://www.reuters.com/article/2013/...98I0T020130919 vs the US, Canada broadcasters can't strong arm themselves into the high hidden carriage fees like the US RSN's do. In the US, it basically goes like this, fox (or whatever) sportsnet will say give us $5 per subscriber, put us on your most basic tier or we won't give you the channel at all, and we'll also withhold Fox News and possibly the local fox station. That is how team's like the Dodger's are getting $300 million a year when less people watch them than the Flames.

TV deals like this don't pay for themselves with advertising dollars. Advertising dollars pay nothing compared to carriage fees. The way that Roger's has bought up out of market (center ice), national coverage, and already owns most of the local coverage in Canada, suggests they have a grand plan to disrupt the current way Canadian's watch hockey, and how they pay for it.

Now that they own out of market, they can sell Flame's (and Leaf's) coverage across the country. The Jets already do the $10/month a la carte model. And they probably see that as the starting point of their model. They'll create Sportsnet Flames, Sportsnet leafs, etc for $10/month with cable tv or $20/month standalone (they are a cable company after all) that they will sell across the country. They'll keep some national games on free tv to allow NHL to market themselves. And I'm sure they'll work with the nhl to block out US game center workarounds from Canada.

Just my guess of how it will play out.

That's about how I saw it happening too, though not quite that evil.

But the truth is, a la carte + this TV deal = expect to pay more for hockey.

The Sunday games will be shown on City TV and not Sportsnet (at least that is present plan).
Wednesday - Sportsnet
Saturday - CBC/Sportsnet/City
Sunday - City
It'll be a busy Sunday for City with their NFL coverage prior to the NHL game. I wonder which network will show the possible Friday games that was mentioned in the blog.

Last night was a prime example of how TSN has seriously missed the boat when it comes to Wednesday night hockey. This had doubleheader written all over the place. The Habs game was on TSN and there were 3 hours in between that game which went to the SO and the Flames game so no pre-empting. Sportsnet would have this as a doubleheader but that is for next season. Good riddance to TSN.

do we know why it was an 8pm start if it was not part of a doubleheader?

Probably so it wouldn't take viewers away from TSN's national telecast.

Also I think TSN has National exclusive rights for as long as their game is showing on Wednesday nights.

So if the Flames game was going to be televised (by Rogers or TSN) it needed to be an 8PM start.

Yup. TSN's contract gives them exclusive rights on Wednesdays between 7-10ET. Sportsnet was contractually forbidden from showing the game before 8 without TSN's permission. Same reason as why Rogers often shows Oilers games at 1PM on Saturdays. They can't interfere with CBC's exclusivity.

Duthie on TEAM 1040 this morning stated that he, Dreger and Mckenzie have all committed long term to TSN.

Too bad. I like Duthie and MacKenzie. Dreger is irrelevant IMO. It doesn't change much though, as they'll still be doing their thing, just during a show of some sort vs in intermissions

Bob tweeted yesterday that TSN is in the works to do something to ensure that TSN will still be the place for hockey news. I wonder what their plans are

With Duthie re-signing with TSN, I wonder if RSN will keep Millard as the main host or go after Ron Maclean

Think they have to go after Maclean. They need someone that the nation recognizes and respects.

Lest we forget broadcasters migrate from Sportsnet to TSN, not the other way around. Unless Sportsnet is opening up the pocketbook in a big way, they're aren't going to acquire much in terms of talent that isn't just coming from unemployment (aka CBC). TSN is still going to try and be the #1 news source for hockey, which as evidence from trade deadline day and July 1 becoming quasi-national holidays, isn't a bad play.

I bet Maclean goes over after the 2016 Olympics...and remains a part of "Hockey Night" until then.

They don't really need these guys.. get young blood in there.
I really like Jeff Marek's work. Also like Ken Reid.

After 2016 MacLean will be closer to 60 then 50.
