So the politics at play are that HC takes a long look at guys careers and not just small sample sizes to make their selections? What a horrible way to do things!
Jamie Benn is the poster boy for late bloomers and had no problem making the WJHC squad.
Josh Anderson was undrafted coming out of midget, hasn't played for Canada internationally and he made it. Domi and Nurse have both been part of Hockey Canada and were passed over for spots this year.

So is Paul Ranheim a good comparable for Emile Porrier? Hopefully with a little better scoring touch, although Paul did have a 68 goal season with the Golden Eagles.

Super unlikely. They have way fewer cuts to make this year.

If you you can't answer your own question just keep your trap shut.
And if you think qualified scouts make the decisions for HC...think again.

Anderson, Bigras and Girard are all good players. I know Craig Button has been very impressed this year by Girard. Bigras was drafted just outside the 1st round in a very deep draft last year. Anderson I know less about but somebody already covered him.
Yes, qualified scouts make the decisions for HC. They can make mistakes and aren't perfect but to suggest they haven't based these decisions on a lot of scouting would be wrong.

I cheer for Canada every time, though I hope our picks perform well. I can't understand not cheering for Canada. For these kids, this is one of the biggest tournaments there is. For fans of international competition where contracts have yet to spoil the seed, this is also a great tournament - so let's not call it unimportant because you couldn't care less while stuffing your face with Turkey and bonbons over the holidays.

Canada always takes role players to the WJC. Nothing has changed this year.

THIS JUST IN... EMILE POIRIER LEFT OFF LIST OF SURPRISE PLAYERS LEFT OUT OF CANADA WJHC SELECTION CAMP ... What a snub!
http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/blogs/jrh...211256654.html
People here need to buy an ounce of objectivity and realize that Poirier was never making this team. Even if you think Leier and Anderson shouldn't be there (and I tend to agree), there are more deserving players who weren't invited.

Ryan McGill (asst coach for team Canada) was on the Fan960 today. He mentioned Leier and Girard as players who really stood out to him this summer at the camp.

Drouin was hit from behind in a game tonight. Reports say he suffered a concussion. Obvious WJC implications if he's out for long

Well, he has a higher PPG than any of the players on that list other than Connor Brown...the fact that one particular blogger didn't mention him as a surprise omission by no means makes him less deserving than the other players. Looking purely at his stats, it'd be quite objective to say he had a good shot of making the team - 3rd in QMJHL scoring now.

Regarding the snub for Poirier. I just think it is amusing that Hockey Canada, even though Subban played horribly in camp last year, used the body of work through the season to justify it. Poirier, who didn't have the best subway series, but is having a phenomenal season and it doesn't seem to matter.

Why doesn't it seem to matter?
Every guy on at the camp has phenomenal backgrounds which is why they are there. They have all shown they have played and can play at an elite level.
Poirier just missed the cut, no big deal. Why does everyone try to come up with the BS reasons to try and make it out to be something different from what it was?

Its not like its the be all end all anyways. A lot of guys that go to the WJC don't amount to anything. It's nice to be a part of it, but it's certainly not a deal breaker by any means.

^^^ I completely agree. Just would have added to the WJC watching experience. IMO I also think they got it wrong.

No Flames prospects on team Canada?
I find it hard to believe that the 29 other teams are also drafting and developing prospects. Obviously Hockey Canada has some sort of bias against the Flames.

Would of been cool to see Poirier on the team. I just hope he channels it into a positive and dominates the Q some more.

I know they all can't make it, but, I'm a bit surprised at Poirier not making the list. Especially since he is having a great year and one would figure that his speed on the larger ice surface would of come in handy. They got guys who have skating issues (could be much improved) like Gautier on the team who is now going to be on the bigger ice which I'm sure is gonna be a challenge for him. Interesting selections if you are doing this in a stratigic fashion.

Gauthier was one of the best players on the big ice in the U-18's.
Outside of the top line (and maybe even better than Reinhart-Klimchuk some games) he may have been the best player for Canada.

You can call it politics or whatever it is... but reputation or whatever goes into some of these picks.
Jake Paterson - one of the two goalies named, has been brutal this year. He's rocking an .899 save percentage and 3.69 GAA on a good team this year. If the best players were picked he wouldn't be on the team. But he was on the team last year and he's on the team this year despite playing awful all year.

He was also Canada's best goalie by far last year.
I would think that, coupled with the fact that Canada doesn't really have any blue-chip goalies, meant he would be back.

Looks like Drouin has concussion-like symptoms... any chance for Poirier to fill in?
