Seems reasonable considering the injuries.
Bodes well for Sieloff being called up IMO. Might have already happened if not for the injury.
Sieloff crushing Sean would have sucked.

Feaster's statement:

Quote:
"The Calgary Flames Hockey Club will not be assigning Sean Monahan to join Team Canada for the upcoming World Junior Championships in Malmo, Sweden. We have spent a great deal of time discussing and debating the pros and cons of the situation in the context of what is best for Sean’s continued professional development as a hockey player, as well as what is in the best interests of our team, our fans, and our organization. We have concluded that in light of the prominent role Sean has played on our team to date, and the role we project he will continue to play once he returns from his injury, that Sean will remain with our hockey club. We have informed both Sean and Hockey Canada of our decision, and we wish Team Canada great success at the World Junior Championships.”

May it's just a "save face" move by the Flames for not releasing Monahan. How will it look if the Flames publicly encourage Monahan to play at the WJC and then he is not selected?

Gather round youngin's and I tell you of a tale, a tale of a man who thought he could beat sureLoss in posting news. Not only did he post it in the wrong thread, but he was late, by a week.
I know this story because I was that man. And it is a shame I live with every day.
The lesson here is don't try to beat that which is unbeatable, instead beat something you are familiar with beating and stick to that my friends.. leave the news to the pro.

That's a stupid comparison. There are no Flames games during the Olympics. You can bet if the NHL was not going to Sochi, Monahan would not be going to the Olympics. Sabres wouldn't loan Miller to the US either even though they won't be playing anymore meaningful games during the season.
Islanders wouldn't lend Tavares as well. He's a young kid that would benefit from a winning atmosphere too right?

Watching the US games will be my #1 priority. But looks like their games are on even earlier than the Canadian games

I can't say that I agree, but will acknowledge that my limited understanding of the dynamics of player development at the NHL level leave me unqualified to question the decision.
Although, Feaster has never let a dangerious lack of knowledge stop him...

As stated already, I really hope this means Sieloff is going to get a shot upstairs before the end of the season. Trade deadline hurry up and open up some spots!

It's very simple.
If the player is getting plenty of ice time and finding success at the NHL level, sending them back to play with juniors is a waste of time for their development.

I am okay with the decision. I hoped to be watching several Flames prospects in this tourney and a bit disappointed there will only be Gillies.
Having said that I am a bit upset that Poirier did not make the team so out of spite to team canada I am glad the flames are not releasing Monahan.
At the end of the day it comes down to what the organization thinks is best for the player and I trust their decision

Are you sure that playing for a team that's pretty much destined for a lottery pick, as opposed to playing for a team with legitimate gold medal aspirations, can be defined as "finding success"? Certainly, Monahan's personal development has been great this year, but what about the importance of instilling a winning culture, and learning to deal with the pressures of high expectations?
It would seem to me that, from an organizational standpoint, there are few expectations at all this year.

Two week tournaments don't do that. It's not like flipping a switch, IMO.

I disagree with your post. Is a 2 week tournament really going to immerse him in a winning culture? I don't know if it is long enough to have an impact. I do agree with the pressure comment though.
Also the organization has stated there are expectations to play hard every game and not give up. For the most part the team has bought in. The flames are realistic that they don't have the pieces to make the playoffs but they have gone out of their way to say they have high expectations for their players

Feaster on not sending Monahan to WJC: “We can look at the record right now and say ‘Oh the team’s not in a playoff position' and you can project and speculate all you want but the fact and the matter is every time we put the sweater on our expectation is we go out there to win and we believe in putting the best product on the ice that we’re able to.”
