I would like nothing better then ammunition to prove that Hartley isn't treating players like Baertschi and Backlund the right way. But a tough guy that can't play hockey complaining that the coach suggests he needs to fight to stay in the NHL rings a bit hollow. Especially when it is coming from someone with the track record of making stupid public comments.

Roy and Tanguay both liked him, Parker didn't. It's all irrelevant, but if you're going to make one statement relevant you have to take into the account of the others. Parker was always a punk, and would have had no career at all were he not a tough guy. Tanguay however? Neither of those things, and still found a fit with Hartley.
Not that this matters at all, but how do people think Roy talks to his players? or Torts? What do you think will happen if MacT steps behind the bench? We've all heard those guys go off plenty of times, you think they get nicer in the locker room? The way Hartley carries himself is commonplace in the NHL. This is not some shocking revelation, nor should it be treated as such. The locker room is a hard place with unfiltered speech. There have been countless coaches who have an edge to them, but for a player to come out and say he was bullied? Ridiculous.
Just look at the Miami Dolphons situation, with pretty much everyone turning on the guy who came out and said he was bullied. That situation is MUCH worse than this one. This is basic, run of the mill stuff.
If there is one thing we can, for an absolute fact surmise from this article, is that Hartley (at least once) treated a dirty player with an attitude poorly. No other assumptions can or should be made. Hell, he's told Grats, Jackman, and possibly Bouma not to fight. Doesn't really match up with the man Parker makes him out to be.
|
I think I made it quite clear why Roy or Tanguay would like Hartley and Parker would not. I don't think Hartley would dare use the same tactics with Roy and Tanguay that he allegedly did with Parker.
What difference does it make if Parker was an enforcer. And there's really no need to call him names. He was a guy like any one else who did something to make a lot of money. Regardless of any of that I think it's common sense to not treat someone like trash because they just so happen to take out your trash for you.

I don't really know what to make of the article... but I do think there may be some bias in the Calgary Sun article about Hartley/Tanguay since it was written on the day Hartley was announced as head coach of the Flames, and Tanguay was still on the team.

If by "calling him names" you mean referring to him as the type of player he absolutely was his entire time as a player, then yes, that is what I was doing. Being an enforcer doesn't mean you have a free pass to be a dirty player. I think you're confused as to why he treated Parker that way. We can only guess, but I find it hard to believe it was because he was an enforcer, considering the lack of enforcers who have echoed his sentiments.
Would it be nicer for you if I said he was a disrespectful player who took advantage and bullied other players without regard to their feelings or physical well being? Because that's who Parker is. Is it not common sense that Parker should never have treated other players like trash? Do we absolve him of his past simply because he claims to be mistreated by a coach? Sorry, but I'm of the mind that Parker deserved every ounce of the mistreatment he may or may not have received.

So if you familiarize yourself with Scott Parker, you will find he may not be such a tender fella who would be taken aback by name calling.
This is the interview where he notes that guys call each other d***head or a**hole in the dressing room, refers to both Hartley and Ron Wilson with such terms of endearment, notes that he started a lot of fights in practice, and suggests that Steve Moore thinks he is better than everyone else due to being college educated and a few knocks to the skull could bring him to everyone else's level. No trouble using language that would offend many himself.
Poor guy, Hartley threatened him with the minors.

I'm for any coach that can install a defensive system. 28th last year and 30th this year. I guess according to Hartley this is all Sven's fault for not playing a proper 2-way game. I don't blame Sven for being upset when the rest of the team stinks playing defense and he's the guy getting singled out.
I'm all for tough love when players aren't giving 100% but when a coach's team has the worst GAA in the league and he's benching the same guy over and over for not playing well defensively that rings pretty hollow to me and looks to be more personal seeing no other regulars get benched despite all of them taking turns making big give-aways.

What are you even saying? What does how Parker played on the ice have anything to do with whether his coach can threaten him and call him names? He was a goon, his coach threaten him if he didn't want to be a goon. No one is absolving anything, where did you even get that idea. Did you read the article? Because he makes clear the fact that he knew the physical consequences of his job, he just didn't appreciate the threats and treatment from his own coach. You are confusing two very different things.
And your last sentence is the reason I rarely post on here. You just need to relax. Not sure if you have something personal against Parker or what but you can talk about something without calling people punk and dirty.

Lets get the record straight here...... I don't think anybody here really cares about Scott Parker or wants to try to paint Scott Parker as some sort of victim or saint.

Man, like this place needed more drama. Newsflash: nhl coaches are harsh. All of them. They'll push you until you hate them, despise them. But they get your attention. I've seen this as a player in other sports.
It's a fine line. You're pushing players to their limits. Torts almost broke richards (a seasoned veteran), but it's not like he didn't want him to succeed. When things don't work out i'm not surprised that there is a bit of ill will leftover. Not an easy job by any stretch.

I don't know about anyone else but threatening players on the bench of inhaling chocolates fumes is hilarious.
Scott Parker owes his life to bob.

I'm not sure why you think anybody needs to relax or what exactly your reason for not posting here is, but it's your own concern. I'm plenty relaxed, but you seem upset. He was a dirty player, that's that. You're taking issue because Hartley "supposedly" threatened him and called him names. Ever heard what the inside of an NHL locker room sounds like? What players say to each other on the ice? You honestly think Parker hasn't ever called someone a name? Threatened a player?
This is a non-issue. If this sort of stuff upsets you, then a locker room is likely no place for you. I doubt this is even the worst thing Hartley said, let alone things other coaches or players have said. Just chill, let it go.

This article is from one point of view. Maybe Parker was a head case and a cancer in the room and Hartley was putting him in his place. Who knows? It's all perspective. Obviously it makes Hartley look like a heartless a-hole, but I'd like to her both sides of the story before I start judging people.

Brent Sutter is a much better coach than Bob Hartley.

Now this statement is bordering on the insane...
Look at the rosters Hartley had compared to what Sutter has. How many playoff games did we have with Sutter?
Year 1 of a rebuild and this forum is already starting to meltdown. Reality check, there is no coach in the nhl that could coax this team into the playoffs. We are bad... As for defensive system, when you have goalies like Berra who lets in weak goals from the corner, of course you are going to suffer defensively.
I don't like how Hartley is treating Baertschi or Backlund but at the same time it is no different than how Sutter was treating Stajan.
As for the article to be honest all I see is a player running his mouth and airing dirty laundry. Given the type of player he was, I find it hard to feel sorry for him.

Seriously? You honestly think feaster or Burke are going to read this and go " OMG this is terrible we have to get rid of our head coach right now" . Probably pat him on the back and say nice job.

I can't believe some people actually think Hartley should be fired for this.
What's next? Put Monahan on waivers because some random kid says he beat him up and stole his lunch money 6 years ago.
