One of the first years in recent memory where a few Flames prospects are even good enough to be considered, and people are jumping ship on team Canada because they weren't taken? What a joke. The Flames have had what? 1? 2 prospects make team Canada over the last 6 years? Who cares.

I'm all for cheering on your country. It's a bit silly to cheer on a different country, but I guess there's even such thing as bandwagon fans on the international stage.

Brent Sutter is the best choice to coach this team. This is where he excels. He and Don Hay are gods among men when it comes to coaching kids in jr. Tack on Craig Hartsburg and the triple threat is complete.

My 2 cents: Poirier should be there ahead of Shinkaruk.

Not only that, but he just seems to be more of a perimeter guy then anything else.

It's still a really fun tournament to watch, some great hockey between all the teams.

Disappointed Poirier didn't make it, thought he had a good chance but by no means was a lock. Jankowski was a long shot, was just happy he got the summer camp experience in. Klimchuk is still eligible next year.

The World Juniors is a great tournament but it has shown to have little to no bearing on if a prospect makes it or not.

Emile Poirier leads the CHL in shorthanded goals (5) and points (6)
Emile Poirier would rank third among all invited forwards in goals with 20
Emile Poirier would rank sixth among all invited forwards in points with 44
Emile Poirier would rank tied for third among all invited forwards in +/- with a +18

It sucks as a fan to see one of your favorite prospects get overlooked continuously by the minds at HC (he has never suited up for TC at any level..) but honestly more than anything I just feel terrible for him. This was his last opportunity to ever get a chance to play in a tournament that he probably grew up watching and dreaming about playing in. He has done absolutely everything in his power to put himself in a position to earn a spot on this team and yet comes up just short despite being one of the more productive and qualified players in the country.

Hopefully he takes this omission in a positive light and uses it as the fuel he needs to accelerate his development.

As for the team itself..I have a hard time believing they can win with the tandem of goaltenders we have between the pipes. When compared to the likes of the US (Gillies & Stolarz) and Russia (Vasilevski & Nalimov) we simply don't stack up.

Sorry but this isn't war it's a hockey tournament. I'm a fan of the Flames first and last. Don't get me wrong I'll be cheering for Canada as well but if it comes down to team USA against team Canada and Canada has no Flame prospects I'll be cheering for Gaudreau and team USA.

The last 4 years they have finished top 4 each year and only lost 6 games, 2 of them in OT. I know it isn't up to the insanely high standards that Canada has set at the WJHC but I am not sure that they have looked awfully dumb.

In the past 20 years Canada has played in 15 finals and won a medal 18 times. Even in the recent "hard times" since the last win they have 2 Silvers, 1 Bronze and a 4th place. All this of course with them routinely missing 4+ of the top players that could be available to them. I know it is frustrating for fans to see their favorite players left off the team but Hockey Canada has shown that they are pretty damn good at putting together the best teams to have success at this tournament.

I'm hoping Poirier wasn't picked because he got dinged up recently, if not whoever making the selections should be f***ing fired immediately. No wonder Canada has sucked ass recently.

Gaudreau's too old to play in this tourney. Probably for the best cause he'd likely beat up on team Canada again and I'd be tempted to cheer against my country.

I might anyways for the sake of Gillies though, and maybe just to teach these TC morons for not taking any of our boys. I mean, Shinkaruk?

I was actually pumped for this tourney thinking that there could be 2-4 Flames prospects dressing for the good guys. So much for that.

2-4? Which guys did you have there?

I assume Poirier and I would guess Klimchuk and Jankowski who was the 4th?

Monahan.

I was thinking back to the TC development camps before NHL season kicked off, when most here assumed Monahan would be sent back down after 9, and even if not, would likely be given the chance to go. But much has changed.

At the time I thought Monahan and Poirier were locks (even to be linemates) and Janko/Klim would have an outside chance.

I think its less about jumping ship on Team Canada and more about being Calgary Flames fans more than Team Canada fans, which history has shown has some politics involved.

If Poirier made the team I would be cheering for them to win it hands down.

But since its looking like he will not I think Team Canada becomes a team you'll cheer for so long they don't come up against a significant Flames prospect i.e. Gillies. Last year I was happy to see Gaudreau dominate and win gold along with Gillies and Sieloff over Canada.

If Team Canada doesn't have a Flames prospect on it I feel like I'm cheering for other teams prospects aka Flames future opponents. Which is fine since its Team Canada but not if they play a future Flame since winning will be good for that player and as a result the Flames.

I'm a Calgary Flames fan more than a Team Canada fan.

How is it politically driven?

You think the guys making the selections are saying "this guy gives us the best chance to win but this other guy is friends with my son so lets go with him."?
