I really hope jankowski gets an invite... I think it would mean a lot to his development.

This tournament happens every year it is not like the Olympics. I totally am in the camp that cheers for flames prospects over team canada. I love when Johnny out up a hat trick on Canada last year.

Maybe Brent has a Flames hate on and won't include any prospects.

The only Jankowski that's going is Ryan.

Okay since it's come up a few times, I have to have someone explain their reasoning for why they think Brent Sutter would leave a player off the team just because he's Flames property. Adding to that, him being able to convince the rest of the selection committee that these players (which if Brent wasn't coaching, in your minds would make the team) aren't worthy of coming to the selection camp, never-mind actually make the team.

It's total BS. Brent Sutter is a professional and a great junior coach/evaluator. I highly doubt he holds a grudge against the Flames, especially considering they never even fired him

Somebody explain to me how 5'11" Felix Girard with 25GP 4G 14A 18pts 68PIM +9 gets an invite while 6'1" Emile Poirier with 28GP 20G 24A 44pts 71PIMs +18 (and best player on his team) does not.

Bummed that Poirier got passed over. However, I will be cheering for Canada to bring home the Gold and that the top goaltender in the tournament will be Gillies for the Silver Medal winning USA.

First of all, I absolutely do not think that happened.
However, if he wanted to do that, it wouldn't be that hard. It's not like we're talking about Drouin here. It is a situation where you are down to 2 very equal players. Choosing this player over that player is not difficult to understand. And arguing the case to convince the others is simply how the process works.
If he wanted to exclude Poirier out of spite (again I do not believe that) all he would have to do is keep arguing that the PMs are too much of a risk. Eventually he would get his way.
Question: do you believe there are no politics in picking these teams?

If he ends up making the team, no one is going to regret it. He's a fireball out there, a guy you love to have on your team. From what I've seen and heard he's like a JG Pageau, not the biggest guy but great two way play and never gives up. He won't be putting up points, and he had the 'A' for the Q in the subway super series.
As a Flames fan, I would have loved for Poirier to be that pest that never quits, getting under the opponents skin, but for whatever reason Hockey Canada thinks Girard would do a better job at that. They watch these guys a whole lot more than us, so I wouldn't doubt they are wrong that Girard would fit that 4th line role better than Poirier.

The Monahan angle is interesting. With the CHL agreement I am guessing he can't go to the AHL for a conditional rehab stint. Can't send him to Ottawa for a conditional rehab stint because he would not be able to come back. The Flames only option are to rehab in Calgary or rehab at the juniors.
I could see them use the world juniors as the conditioning stint before joining the team on the 7th or 9th (I think the 6th would be a stretch with gold medal game being on the 5th with over seas travel). That would give him 7 or 8 games at the WJC while missing 5 Flames games. I could see it working that way.

Oh I agree with what you say here, and I totally think their are politics in picking these teams. There's politics on picking the Peewee 2 teams, it's from the top down in minor hockey. What I don't personally believe is that Brent Sutter would have any real grudge with the Flames, at least not to the point where he would purposefully want to leave players off the team. Most of these guys just want to see these junior players succeed. Case in point, I know for a fact Lowry hates anything to do with the Flames right now, but still gave a glowing review of Keegan Kanzig to the flames scouts when they asked him, because he wants to see Kanzig succeed more than he wants to not see the Flames succeed, if you get what I mean.

It's ironic, but I think the injury actually increases his chances of going.
Prior to the injury I would have thought that there was no way he would want to go and he is an integral part of the Flames roster.
However, with the injury, the timing of the WJCs actually works really well as a fantastic conditioning stint. And that is a way that it can be sold to / bought by all parties involved (Flames, Monahan, and fans)

I hate fans whining about politics when their "guys" don't make the team.
This means way too much to the guys involved to let petty things get in the way of picking the best team.

I haven't seen enough of the Q to make a player by player breakdown so the simple answer would be that the selectors who do watch a ton of each players games figure that Girard would be a better fit for the World Junior team than Poirier.
Also would hope that 5''11 vs. 6'1 would have very little to do with their selection.

I completely agree that he wouldn't make a grudge decision towards the Flames. Even if he does hold a grudge, there are too many variables. Hell, he chose Girard - maybe Girard gets traded to the Flames in the summer. Just saying who knows.
So yeah, I agree that it is unlikely.

First off, as I said in an earlier post, I can see what Poirier was left off when he was competing against the likes of Horvat, Laughton, Gauthier, and Lazar for a similar role.
As for why Brent might have a grudge with the Flames? He could be petty, like me ;p If I were him, I'd be pissed that my NHL coaching career seems to have been completely de-railed by a team that would not do the right thing, which was rebuild. Brent clearly saw things differently from Feaster and management, i'm sure there's an article on it, and that's why he was not hired back. It must also piss him off that, less than a year after that, the team did go with the rebuild that he wanted.
Also, can you elaborate on why Lowry has a hate on for the Flames? That's really interesting.

I'm pretty sure he can go to Abby for a conditioning stint. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong but Sean actually got injured, unlike the Sabres/Grigorenko situation

Idiots for not inviting Poirier.
I thought he'd be there for sure. 20g 24a in 28games in the Q. Pffft.
