It always baffles me to see ex-pro players, or guys who spent 4 years in the WHL or NCAA, playing in a low end division beer league. Especially in Calgary, where there are far more appropriate options. I'm guessing some of these guys have ego issues, and need a bunch of pylons to skate around on a weekly basis.

If they're playing with buddies and playing for fun, I don't see an issue. It's when they're playing like they're still getting paid and putting up 7 or 8 points a game, that's when it's an issue.
This summer the league I'm in had an NHL 4th liner playing in the top division, but he was just there for fun and exercise

I don't know where in Iowa you lived, but it was roughly $12-15 a game in Iowa City/Cedar Rapids/Davenport

He's back in Calgary, I believe. Most leagues/teams here, you'll end up paying $700 a season (30ish games + playoffs), and then another $350 for summer league.

It's all about having fun. If you're not having fun quit. I quit my team this summer cause it was no fun at all. I don't care if we lose but lose with some dignity. My team did nothing but bitich and moan at the refs it was all kinds of brutal. When we we're down my team got chippy and want to start fights. I said #### this I don't want to be a part of this. Now I play shinny and I'm having a blast. I just want to go out there and have a good skate and not worry about some idiot wanting to take me out cause he's pissed off. I don't get rec hockey sometimes. Too many players still think they're trying out for the NHL it drives me nuts.

I used to live in Iowa City. The Coralville Mall rink had a league back then, and I think it was around $15 bucks a game. But that was a few years ago now.

I quit last night during the 2nd intermission. We were down 14-0 and the other team was still cherry picking.
I asked the league director if he thought this was fair and he didn't say anything except "if you don't like it, you don't have to play"
a big F you came out, make the league fair and you will have more players instead of pushing people away.
I just couldn't take it anymore.

Have you looked into starting your own league. I assume you are not the only one that feels this way.
You might have success. Now, I have no idea how to run a league, nor do I know how hard it is to get ice or players.
Just an idea.

You could always rent a weekly ice slot and charge $5 a head or something.

There are a few guys trying to start another league as we speak. The issue is that it will be on Monday. A lot of guys cant play Monday nights so they're having a hard time getting guys to sign up.
one of the guys trying to get it started is on my team and asked what I think they should do.
I explained that what they need to do is get with the arena and buy the ice times for Sunday night next session before the guy running the league does now. Then set up the league and basically push that other idiot out.
Since the arena doesn't run the league and some ###### just buys ice time and sets the league up from his home, anyone in theory can buy those ice times and do their own league.
I like most of the guys I play with, the only issue I have is that some, like the captain do not know anything about positioning. So when you expect someone to be where they're suppose to be or close to the right spot they're no where to be found.
Our forwards don't pressure their defense, they come down and try to play defense, when you try to break out they're standing in the high slot not doing anything.
last night I stole the puck from a guy as he was trying to go inside out on me and push it through my legs. I closed my feet and kicked the puck to my stick and rushed out of the zone, their defense gained an angle on me so I made it to the top of their left face off circle with zero chance of a good shot, I look for a pass and not a single player of ours is in the offensive zone. I then try to go low behind the net to buy some time and they're just coasting and I lose possession of the puck.
We do have a kid that has some serious talent, as in he could possibly play USHL junior hockey talent. He has an issue with the "me's" and doesn't pass the puck. through out the game his line mates will be skating open in the neutral zone at speed ready for a pass and he wont even look at them. Instead he dances with the puck trying to do everything on his own.
Oh well, I'd rather play and lose with guys that know what the hell they're doing than play with a bunch of hot shots like him. I'm not the best player by any means but I do know positional hockey.
I just feel really bad for those guys who love hockey that are just learning how to play getting absolutely blitzed and not having fun.

Every league I have played in (all in Calgary) has some sort of waiver as well, but they are still required to have insurance.
Plus I don't think I have ever signed one of those waivers.
