Ask him if he wants to go (privately) if he says yes then tell the media he was given the choice and support him. If he says no tell the media we didn't want to release him.

No. Absolutely should not be. I would rather watch him on the Flames. Canada will have a good team with or without him.

Monahan could be asked a simple question do you want a chance at winning a medal at the WJC's or would you rather play against guys like Toews and have a legitimate chance of being nominated for the Calder trophy?

Personally i don't think the Flames will allow Monahan to play for team Canada given his importance to the Flames currently. Regardless of this hairline fracture to his foot.
As a STH i pay to see him on the Flames not the WJC's.

Also wouldn't Monahan lose a fair amount of money for the time he is away at the WJC's compared to what he is making at the NHL elc?

100% yes. Competition level is less, but he gets a chance to play under really high stakes, something absent from his Junior and Pro resume. its a short tournament, the Flames regular season is a year long pre season anyways. Your only 19 once.

I was thinking along similar lines.

Imagine the fan backlash if Monahan goes, they don't win Gold like the last 4 years and Money gets hurt.
It would negative negative negative. There wouldn't be 1 Flames fan that would be happy Monahan went.
I don't think the Flames would risk that and what if B.Sutter sticks him on the 3rd line.
Was it worth it?

He also only has 1 shot at the Calder which I would think is a more valuable trophy to win.

Considering it would be the highest-pressure, highest-stakes hockey related activity he'll be involved in this year, I see no good reason not to give him the opportunity to have that experience.

I would actually rather see Sean Monahan win the Calder Cup than the Calder Trophy. I want winning. WJC and Calder Cup for Monahan.

Lets watch the Flames prospects shine in the WJC, and then the Heat into late May/June.

Protect the young players from the suck that is the 2013/14 Flames as much as possible.

What?!

Maybe he would simply rather play in the NHL. Maybe he simply finds it more rewarding to be apart of a team at the highest level. Maybe his desires for either individual accolades or team success have absolutely nothing whatsoever to do with this decision.

I think the Flames should loan Monahan out so he can compete for the Allan Cup.

He could be a leader on that team. He has a better chance of winning than if he played with the Flames. We need him in a winning atmosphere!!!

There absolutely is question. This isn't the Olympics weer are talking about. If team and country were more important than the world championships would have the best players.

If that were actually the case, wouldn't it be good for his development to go to Abbotsford or the CHL for the year?

He's succeeding and learning against the best competition in the world in the NHL. He's competing in the faceoff circle against Thornton, Toews, Kesler, Getzlaf and Datsyuk. He's having to go against defencemen Subban, Keith, Seabrook and Doughty. He's scored goals against Bobrovsky, Price, Brodeur, Niemi, Quick and Howard.

Right now he is around NHL managers, coaches, trainers and players. They are all helping him develop. How would it help him develop by going against worse players, without any veteran leadership and a coaching staff meeting him for the first time?

In Calgary he is allowed to learn and make mistakes. In the World Jrs Brent Sutter might staple him to the bench if he makes a mistake. Brent's job is to win the tournament, not to develop the players. From December 10 - January 3, Monahan would miss 12 NHL games and practices in order to play 8 games against inferior competition. You don't get better by playing against players below your skill level. You get better by learning how to play against guys better than you, and raising your game in order to match or better them. In that time period he could be playing against, Igina, Chara, Datsyuk, Crosby, Malkin, Pieterangelo, Giroux and Stamkos. I don't see how beating Germany 8-0 accomplishes that.

I like the way you think. Ya know, it really is a shame that the Calgary Vipers are gone. June to September would be perfect for him.
