Because they paid for the broadcasting rights to NHL hockey. Now that money is free to spend on other content. They will spend it on content that can at least come close to replacing the loss of the NHL.

TSN will be fine. Again, they survived without the NHL before, and they will again. NFL probably draws just as close with the demos advertisers want as the NHL does. The WJHC is still bigger than anything Sportsnet has except the NHL. And TSN will probably still have overall better coverage of the NHL than Sportsnet.

As long as Bob Mackenzie doesn't leave TSN will still have a better trade deadline show and free agent frenzy show.

Unless Sportsnet got the rights to those too....

You mean the shows that everyone has been laughing at for years over how overblown they are?

Even if those disappeared, we'd be fine with Twitter alone.

I hope you're right, I'm not expecting them to get much better though.
Did any of these companies ever have any competition? Its not like if they split the deal up and TSN got Wednesday and Sportsnet got Saturday and Sunday, they are ever competing. Once you win the deal... you've got the night.

TSN could broadcast the games through a potato tonight and they still get the game next week.

WJC has great viewership but its a very quick tournament.

TSN does a great job with CFL and I am sure they will fill their airtime.

As for NFL, I doubt NFL in Canada has the amount of viewers as NHL.

TSN will survive but this is a huge blow, they lost hundreds of hours worth of programing.

I bet, some of their top talent will leave.

The fact that TSN radio is not in Calgary says everything.

Outside Toronto they are only in Winnipeg and Montreal. Surprise surprise, where they have the two regional deals.

TSN will go the ESPN route. Once they don't have NHL hockey, they will talk less about NHL hockey.

Yahoo sports has an article up saying that although TSN will experience some job losses, the chances are that journalistically they may even improve a little bit because they won't have to cozy up to the League as a rights holder anymore and can take a a more liberal hand in criticism. That might be a decent point.

For us Flames Fans in the states, this doesn't change much right? Other than if Rogers boosts prices on Game Center and Center Ice?

I think Sportsnet is bush league like the rest of you, but as long as I get to watch all the flames games I'll be ok..

They can't though. Hockey is the #1 sport in Canada not the #13 behind bowling.

So why are we the red-headed step child in Calgary? Would sure like to be able to switch back and forth between 960 and TSN on the way to work...

Have no idea, but I agree would like some true sports radio competition in Calgary. No I don't consider CHQR 770 competition. Would love for a TSN Radio Calgary to have Stampeders rights but that is for a different forum.

They aren't going to die... viewership may decrease but let's be honest, next trade deadline you'll be right back on TSN if they have McKenzie instead of Kyperios.

Its got the World Cup from 2015 until 2022, curling, CFL, Sportsnet will end up having to give up a bunch of Raptors games to them, Sunday/Monday night football, NBA finals, English Premier League, Tennis Grand slam.... its not like they are going to be showing darts and poker 24/7.

I think that the end result will be improved quality across the board for Sportsnet, for both their regional and national telecasts.

Even if nobody at TSN moves across, CBC has a lot of very capable graphic designers, producers and on-air talent. They're all out of work at CBC because they are getting zero revenue. I think a lot of those people at CBC are going to be moving over and will go a long way to improving Sportsnet's production.

AND now CBC will not be able to recoup any of that $200 million from advertising. They continue to be very generous with other people's money.
CBC paid nothing for this deal, so calm your fears.
