As other people have said, not losing money is enough to be make it worthwhile for CBC.

It seems odd.

I'm wondering how this works out too. Is Rogers selling adspace on HNIC now? And if it is, is CBC paying Rogers to advertise CBC shows during HNIC? I can't imagine it workng that way from CBC's POV. But other than not paying a bunch of money and still showing games, I don't know what CBC gets.
It must be something like PeteMoss is saying.

They still get to promote their programming to the HNiC audience. CBC gets no revenue, but they also have no expenses related to HNiC.
In order to remain at the table with HNiC in its current form, CBC would have likely needed to at least double what they're paying the NHL for rights, and at that point, it's likely no longer a profit generator for the network.
Also, depending on how Rogers will use the CBC's staff (both on camera and off), this may allow them to save some jobs and keep CBC Sports alive for other programming. Losing HNiC outright, would likely have meant the total shutdown of CBC Sports.

They can put up a graphic that says 'Murdock Mysteries' - Tuesday at 8pm. Or something of that nature. If they put on some re-run that no one watches it just fires up the CBC is irrelevant and no one watches it debate.

They still have the regional rights for the Winnipeg Jets and apparently the regional rights for the Canadiens is up for negotiation.

So CBC is paying Rogers to broadcast HNIC, and CBC also got to advertise their crap shows during the game for free. In turn Rogers will use that money to pay CBC to advertise during the broadcast. So at the end of the day there will be no real money changing hands, and both can get free advertisements

Sounds like TSN still has some regional Leafs games as well as the Jets games through 2021 also looks like CBC will be impacted considerably much like TSN;

It also depends on what CBC's mandate is. Are they supposed to be making money, or are they supposed to be promoting Canadian content? If it's the latter, then I'd argue they get to achieve that with this deal without actually spending any money, which in turn means it's probably worthwhile to CBC and to Canadian taxpayers.

Ha! I wonder if that would actually work? I doubt it. Has anyone seen an Arena Football game live? It looks pretty stupid on TV, but maybe it's better in person.

You don't spend $5.2 billion to provide Rob Kerr and Charlie Simmer with a bigger stage. The quality of the broadcasts will go up.

The initial post suggested that the primary purpose would be to lift all of the regional blackouts, and even mentioned Game Centre. Online games are currently blacked out regionally if you live in the region, so I assumed (probably wrongly) that this meant that Flames games, for example, would no longer be blacked out online within the Flames region.
So yeah - I saw Game Centre, lifting of regional blackouts, and got all excited. It probably won't happen, but that's how I arrived at it.

If they're going to spend that much money, what's another few hundred grand to get people who know what they're doing? I don't buy that argument for a second. The $5.2 billion was a starting point.
