With respect to this ESPN has never shown a desire to showcase the NHL.

With ESPN the NHL is behind the NFL, NBA, MLB, CollegeFootball, Nascar, and probably the X games.

Why take less money to be 7th in the line for coverage when you can try to build something with someone.

Shutout of the NHL's new Canadian broadcast agreement is Bell Media, owners of TSN and RDS.

According to a source close to the negotiations, TFP has learned that Bell has initially proposed a deal to the NHL eerily similar to the one the League signed with Rogers, only to shockingly find out on Monday night that the NHL had in fact reached an agreement with Rogers, worth slightly more than Bell had offered.

TSN controls the regional broadcast rights of the Winnipeg Jets for the next eight years beyond this season, and the regional broadcast rights of the Canadiens for the balance of the 2013-14 season.

RDS controls the French regional broadcasts for the Canadiens through the 2014-15 NHL season.

It's believed TSN and RDS will battle to obtain long-term agreements with the Canadiens for regional broadcasts rights, while a source told TFP that RDS will attempt to secure those 60 Montreal games on a national level.

Bettman says NHL goal with this arrangement is that its games are brought to fans in whatever ways possible - cable, telephone, mobile, streaming, whatever. NHL relationship wanted partner with flexibility to move around in platforms. NHL wants fans to have access on any platform they are interested in, or platform/device that develops in the next 12 years.

TVA is part of Quebecor? What does this mean for the potential return of the Nordiques? A good fit I assume.

That's sounding really positive for the cable cutters out there. I've no problem paying to watch NHL online, but it should really be an "all in" approach. I pay the NHL, I get to watch every game.

Yup. You would think the NHL will be in Quebec within these 12 years so Quebecor is set up nicely here.

Just one of these reporters should have the foresight to ask 1 simple question that will make their headline. How many games will continue to be covered moving forward that is parts of households cable plans and not a separate charge?

They won't answer that.

CBC reporter asks if this means PPV hockey is coming.

Rogers Media responds that no pricing has been considered. Wants fans to have choices, mentioned a la carte delivery as is being discussed in the industry. Rogers Media says this will evolve over time, but fundamentally it is about given fans as much choice as possible.

I dunno about that. There was a time before the Sportsnet regional games that we didn't get all the games. TSN was around then and in hockey then and they didn't step up. They just stayed in the big markets.

Plus, I'm sure TSN could have bought the other markets anytime in the last few years if they wanted to outbid Sportsnet. But they didn't. So it's not like we could just CHOOSE the company we wanted to serve us. We got Sportsnet, cause that's who wanted to buy the market. There's no evidence to your argument. It's possible, but it's hardly a given. As well, if TSN choses to buy a market that made them less money, perhaps their production value would be worse too. The money has got to go somewhere, and the savings have to come from somewhere.

Perhaps TSN would buy in now, but that's still kinda counter intuitive to the point. More competition is going to make it more likely to see all the games.

Question around bid to Bettman -what made this the best deal?

Bettman reiterates this is not only about money. Commends Rogers on its strategy and the way it approached the NHL.
