As a result, TSN will likely be expanding their MLS coverage and soccer in general. However, CBC and Sportsnet have the 2014 World Cup rights.

SN:
-Blue Jays
-NFL - Thursday Night
-NHL National coverage
-UFC
-WWE

I think the Raptors are divided all over the place.

With all the regional channels SN has been buying/making this had to happen eventually.

Now my damn cellphone bill will also increase.
TSN would likely do well with CHL...

I'll bet TSN will sign a sub lease agreement with Rodgers to broadcast the NHL. I'm not overly worried.

Very interesting. I think we'll start to see a migrating of on-air talent to Sportsnet over the next little while.

I have the Super Sports pak, so I won't be affected, but I suspect this hurts Centre Ice.

So besides the non-Toronto MLS teams (and I'm not even certain about those), the Jets, Canadians and the CFL, Rogers either has a stake in the team or owns broadcast rights to pretty well every major sports team in Canada.

Owns - Toronto Blue Jays
Partial Ownership - Toronto Raptors, Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto FC
Full broadcast rights (regional and national) - Flames, Oilers, Canucks, Senators
National broadcast rights - Jets, Canadians (TSN has regional rights)

Definately, ala Damien Cox SN will now start to poach TSN talent.

but BUT perhaps you'll never hear Ray Ferraro again.

I'm not sure how it works perhaps the Leafs produce their own broadcasts, but Sportsnet shows a bunch of games with the same crew.

Biggest winner on this deal - Nick Kypreos. He doesn't have to worry about those ****ers at TSN anymore.

I hope TSN survives out of this and I can see one way they can do this. Cover the 4 American original six teams. Still a lot of loyalty towards these teams in Canada . Some of us have dads who were property of these teams when rights were based on geography (in the case of my dad, the Blackhawks had his rights in Renfrew but were transferred to the Red Wings when he moved to Forest Lawn).

Wow, shocking. So TSN can't show any NHL games? when will this start to be in effect? Hopefully all the good talent goes to CBC.

They could build a nice package with CHL games leading up to the World Juniors every year that showcase some of the expected Team Canada players, followed by the World Juniors themselves.

Then, in the New Year, showcase the favourite teams leading up to the Memorial Cup. They could also showcase some of the expected first round picks in the upcoming Draft.

With Sportsnet showing so many NHL games, they'll almost certainly have to give up the CHL, Subway Super Series, and the Memorial Cup.

@tsnjamesduthie: Been a privilege being a part of The NHL on TSN the past 12 years. Congrats and best of luck to Rogers/HNIC.

@rayferrarotsn: Flying to Pittsburgh for #Leafs-Pens tomorrow. Didn't think this would now be in last yr of rights deal for #TSN ..

@sladurantaye All CBC does under new deal is show the game. Rogers controls ads etc.

@sladurantaye CBC boss confirms Rogers will assume "all editorial control of Hockey Night in Canada," including on-air talent.

@sladurantaye CBC boss: "The CBC was prepared to do a fiscally responsible deal to preserve hockey on Saturday nights"

I hate Kyper and Doug McLean so much haha... But business is business and they work for the winning network.

Side note: Doug McLean will be talking about how he needs a new salary and how they have national rights now blah blah blah

I'm surprised TSN is out in the cold, as they've been ramping up every year for a while now. In fact it felt like for a long time Sportsnet was going to be pulling up the rear.

However, I will say I don't get as mad about Sportsnets regional coverage as most do. If we didn't have their regional coverage, we'd be out a lot of Flames games. Yes the production is lower quality, but something is better than nothing.

Anyway, I'm not sure how this deal can be any good for the average NHL fan. It was nice having options and nice with the different companies in different niches. CBC for huge Saturday games, TSN for huge weekday games, and Sportsnet for smaller regional matchups. But it does go to show you how television is becoming all about content. With distribution and access all blending together it's become all about who owns what shows (and leagues).

Oh, and I do agree the talent on TSN is for the most part better than Sportsnet. But I'm sure most of them will get jobs on the other networks.

Rogers is making a HUGE move in this, surprised TSN couldn't get in somehow. But I can't see how it won't pay off for them, even if it costs a bunch now.

Except that nothing is not the alternative. If RSN wasn't doing every Flames game TSN would be.

I imagine that this won't affect the Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver markets as they will continue with their basement budget telecasts but Leafs fans won't stand for the dog and pony show Western Canada has been saddled with.
Won't stand for it? What are they gonna do? My guess is they'll watch and bitch about it in much the same way as we do.

Now we know why it was so important to Rogers for Verizon not to enter the Canadian market ha ha.

if the blackouts are lifted, and i get all sportsnet channels (which i do today), does that mean i no longer need GCL/centerIce to watch all flames games from here in ON????
