That's Ortio's first career AHL shutout. First professional one if you don't consider the ECHL professional haha.

How is Granlund's two way game? I see he's been moved to the wing.

It's so-so. He gives an effort haha. The best part of his defensive game is that he can read passes well. He just doesn't have all that much strength in his own zone to battle it out along the boards. And he certainly doesn't block shots.

But hey, he gives a good effort and where there's a will there's a way, so it's just a matter of working with him.

So Ortio is 9-0, 2.26 GAA, .928 save percentage so far in the AHL. Pretty, pretty good.

Top 4 Heat rookies:

Knight -> 7-11-18 in 22 games (0.82 ppg)
Hanowski -> 7-8-15 in 21 games (0.71 ppg)
Granlund -> 8-6-14 in 18 games (0.78 ppg)
Ferland -> 4-7-11 in 19 games (0.58 ppg)

It's worth noting that Ferland put up all of his 11 points in the last 8 games which is 1.38 ppg.

2nd year pros of note:

Billins -> 6-12-18 in 18 games (1.00 ppg)
Reinhart -> 3-10-13 in 18 games (0.67 ppg)

So, that's 6 of the top 10 Heat offensive contributors.....and they are either 1st or 2nd year NA pros.

It sounds like he needs to do some strength training next off season. No surprise as he's pretty light (now listed at 185 lbs on Flames site, so he is growing) . We'll see how much he wants a NHL career, as skill wise he looks promising.

I'm betting seeing big brother playing in the big show on a regular shift this year will inspire him.

Is it true Ferland has hit 5 goal posts in the last 2 games?

I listened to tonight's game, I don't recall him hitting one tonight.

I wasn't able to listen to the last couple games though.

Wouldn't be surprised though, the kid has found his confidence and has been absolutely rolling in all areas.

Believe it or not, Brett Olson is also a 2nd year pro 4-19-13 in 21 games (0.62 ppg). 2nd season with the Heat after four seasons with Michigan Tech. (26.75 years old)

So that's 7 of the top 10!

Cundari was adequate in camp, but I think Sieloff, Ramage and Wotherspoon all leap-frogged him organizationally just based on camp. Billins, too.

Billins especially in my opinion. There is only room for so many undersized defenders in north american pro hockey. With Cundari being 5'9" he needs master a Russell like game to be effective out there. Defender depth chart has flipped around, right now I have it:

Billins (5'10" 175lbs) 24 yo. (OFD)
Breen (6'7" 224lbs) 24 yo. (DFD)
Ramage (6'0" 205lbs) 22 yo. (DFD)
Wotherspoon (6'2" 203lbs) 20 yo. (2WD)
Cundari (5'9" 195lbs) 23 yo. (OFD)
McKenzie (6'2" 195lbs) 24 yo. (DFD)
Lamb (6'1" 215lbs) 25 yo. (DFD)
Arsene (6'2" 195lbs) 33 yo. (DFD)
Sieloff (6'0" 197) 19 yo. (DFD)

I left Sieloff at the bottom because of injury issues. Much nicer defence corps than in years past.

GAMEDAY!

Abbotsford Heat (16-5-0-1) vs Iowa Wild (Minnesota Wild) (6-10-0-0)
4:05pm MST Start

Notes:
Abbotsford Heat have a 4 point lead on the Manchester Monarchs for 1st overall in the AHL
Heat lead the Grand Rapids Griffins by 5 points for 1st overall in the Western Conference
Joni Ortio appears to be some sort of goaltending god/machine/witchcraft master (no source on this)

Cundari is undersized but I think he plays a much more physical game than Russel from what I've seen. I think he needs to be more like Ference to have a chance with the Flames. Ference is 1-2 inches taller but similar build and plays a hard nosed, aggressive game...a bit of a bulldog. His offensive production has dropped quite a bit as well. Is that just ice time or has he regressed a bit?

I was looking around this morning but couldn't find the Abbotsford Heat record book. I'm wondering if Ortio has set any records for the Heat during his hot start..

Any word on if it will be MacDonald or Ortio this afternoon?

Here's the AHL Guide and Record Book: http://cdn.rapidmanager.com/ahl/file...RecordBook.pdf

The Heat records start on page 44.

I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. But impressed to see some of the records none the less.

Just wondering more about wins to start a season, i'm sure he's got that one. I'm assuming Brust set it last year with his 6 in a row to start the year.

Cool little pdf document, gotta bookmark it.

edit: also looks like Nemisz will be very close to the Heat's All time leader scorer by the end of the season if he keeps his pace.
