Feaster didn't sign SOB. He was part of the Tanguay trade.
The reasoning for bringing in SOB was that he added toughness and size to an otherwise small d group.
Smid now adds the same, but is also a better player than SOB making him expendable.

SOB has disappointed, and yeah, they'll be hard pressed to find takers for him. Maybe if someone desperately needs an injury replacement / depth.
At trade deadline it might be a different situation.

Quincey, for example, doesn't seem to be doing so hot in his second stint in Detroit. Would SOB+Backlund for Quincey, Tootoo, and a pick/prospect be out of the realm of possibility? Just some food for thought.
|
Quincey and Ericsson have been perhaps detroits 2 best defenders thus far. I cant see them moving Quincey.
The Filpulla hole at C seems to have hurt detroit a bit and Backlund being given a shot there would make sense. But for a return, I would like a Tatar or a Martin Frk and a pick in return

actually a package of SOB and Backlund to the Wings makes perfect sense to me. I wouldn't mind taking anyone from that team as a cap dump if they would give up value along with it. I really like Frk even just for his name!

Don't think he's disappointed, comes as advertised. He's a physical depth defenceman. Don't mind him as a 6-7 guy, if someone wants him and makes a good offer, fine, but I don't see the need to rush the guy out the door. If Smid gets injured, who becomes our physical dman?

i've been quite disappointed with backlund all season, but would prefer he be given a 100% opportunity to be playing on a scoring line for 2 straight weeks. I would also like to see him played on the wing.
He's a smart player who has all the tools. i just feel the flames are likely to lose any deal where backlund is involved, unless other teams are actually willing to trade assets based on backlund's untapped potential.
i would like to see the lines as:
cammalleri - stajan - d.jones
baertchi - monahan - hudler
backlund - colborne - b.jones
bouma - galiardi - mcgratton
or something like that. i really hope to see a fired up backlund in the next few games now that he's heard the rumours.

Detroit has Datsuyk, Weiss, Helm and Andersson at C - they have more glaring needs at D. Can't see them interested in Backlund/SOB. Would have to be substantial salary coming back, don't see the fit. Holland is one of the best GMs and don't think we will be able to bend him over in a trade. He will bury money instead of making a bad trade.

If the Flames are considering trading Backlund, wtf is he not playing 2nd line C and getting PP time?

I wonder what SOB would look like on a team like the Ducks or the Hawks...

Firstly, interesting to see that Feaster is back to testing the trade market through the media.
Given the restrictions he seemed to be under in talking to them after the O'Reilly thing last year (recall you didn't hear a peep from him for a couple months in the media, or did these type of rumors appear in that time), it must mean these players are as good as gone with a fairly low return expected, as other avenues have likely been explored.
I'll give Feaster credit for getting anything for a totally useless (without Iginla) Tanguay and that contract, but it meant taking a similar contract back in Jones and downgrade of defender (though Sarich was not a Hartley fan anyways).
Now with Smid aboard, I assume they'd rather have a guy like Breen come in and get time instead of SOB as the 7-8 guy, but I don't think SOB has done any less or more than was expected of him.
As for Backlund, he's been given a fair bit of rope over the past 4 years to cut out his niche and find his role in the team. He's gotten a bit better in so far as playing a tougher and more complete game, but likely not to the point where you'd think a guy playing that many NHL games should be on the progression chart, and given that he's always supposed to have been a skill first cetnre, that's fallen by the wayside.

I'm not really sure how SOB disappointed? It's not like he is some rookie who we didn't know what to expect. He probably exceeded my expectations which weren't very high to begin with but he's played like he has his whole career.

I remember around this time 2 years ago Bourque's name was being tossed out there by Dreger and a couple months later the Cammalleri deal happened. I still think that is a win trade for Calgary considering no one is giving up good assets for Bourque today and the Flames are poised to get something good for Cammy.
I still feel the Flames are really dealing from a position of strength here so I don't anticipate losing the trade

If Smid or any other d-man gets injured they will just shorten the bench like when Gio was/is injured. Before the Smid trade SOB was playing 7 minutes a night.

Really hope they don't trade backlund. Would love to see him bounce back and score 2 goals on wednesday. I have that bad feeling that I had before the phaneuf deal though.

Sarich is definitely better than O'Brien and is proving it in Colorado, but Hartley wasn't going to play him anyways so it doesn't really matter.
Hopefully we can get something for him, this year or the next

I would rather Stajan traded instead also, but at the same time i'm not sure what that would solve? My guess is if Stajan was traded that Knight would be called up. If Backlund could not get a hold of 2nd line center, or whatever Stajan is, in a couple of games i could see Knight getting Backlunds minutes. What would be Backlund's value if Knight comes in and keeps him down on the 4th line?
