This would be a big mistake for calgary. You can't a 23 yr old centerman with upside making 750k anywhere...this would be a joke!!

Savard was already producing as a top six forward....like 0.80 points per game over three and a half seasons.
St.Louis had only played 60 or so games before being dealt...

None of those three have anything in common with Backlund IMO.

Backlund is making 1.5m per year on a two year deal.

Nah, Brett Hull and Savard were both established already.

Hull had 50 points in 52 games with us the season he was traded. Savard was a 60 point player on average for us too.

4 or 5 teams are kicking tires because they have good scouts who can evaluate talent properly and they know Backlund is being misused by Hartley.

Would be a huge mistake by the Flames to trade Backlund. It is already a huge mistake in the way he is being used. This is getting ridiculous.

Never understood why so much expected out of Backlund.
I can't remember any year when he lit it up offensively as projected top six players usually do in junior or minor leagues.
It's always been somebody's "projection of his skills" to NHL success.
In his book, Fleury laughed at all these type of draft picks by Flames. Players that had never actually produced.
Why trade him now though ? This is the year to let him play a lot.

I am certainly not a fan of Backlund and don't think he has produced at a top 6 level but if Fleury is laughing at this pick then he is a bigger idiot than I thought.

Backlund is 19th in scoring for his draft year (picked 24th) with no guys behind him with a strong likelihood of passing him.

Looking at the guys drafted after him and that you could reasonably say were in the mix at that spot you could say maybe the Flames should have taken Perron but that is about it and he isn't exactly a great player himself.

Backlund wasn't a bad pick he is doing fine for a 24th overall pick.

I do see a fit with the leafs. Not sure what I'd want from them but I could see us taking a cap dump player in the deal as well

All 3 of these players excelled after leaving Calgary- let's not get into petty stats. You are missing the point. My point was, there WAS successfull guys on the fence after being dealt here who did VERY well. They established themselves as ELITE players after they left.

Naw, that's not how the conversation went down.

moon's point was that Backlund hasn't shown much (if any) top six ability in nearly 200 NHL games.

Of the players you listed, two had shown A TON in the way of top six ability, and the other had only a handful of NHL games before being dealt away. They aren't really comparable to Backlund IMO.

Before Marc Savard left he had already put up a well above PPG pace in the AHL, had seasons of 53 and 65 points (plus 33 in 56 games) and had put up insane offensive numbers in junior. He was way more established than Backlund.

Brett Hull had 50 points in 52 games for the Flames prior to the trade and 92 in 62 games the year before in the AHL.

St. Louis is a fluke, 1 in 1000 (maybe 10,000) case that shouldn't be used as a comparison to anyone. Plus another guy who had shown a lot more offense (at the AHL level) than Backlund.

I agree with the "don't sell low" mentality.

The return for Backlund right now wouldn't please anyone.

Some of you have awful sensitivities when it comes to this guy.

I can't see him being a top six centre, he could be a decent third line centre, but I think he will need to improve at his face-offs for that to be the case.

Don't think you can include Brett Hull in there. Everyone knew he was going to be a great player...he was sacrificed for the rest of the pieces the Flames needed to get the Stanley Cup.

Why was Hull traded again?

I don't think realistic people see him as anything more than what you're saying. The problem is would you give him up for a 3rd/2nd rounder? Because that's, most likely, all he'll bring back.

Always been a Backlund fan. I would be sad if he was traded, but not surprised.

Hope he has better luck with another team.

The tough thing for Backlund is, he's had the opportunity to take one of the top two spots in the lineup and he's failed to do it, which means he has to slot in as the 3rd line center. Colborne is clearly outplaying him now and has basically made Backlund expendable. He couldn't supplant a 19 year old rookie, couldn't supplant Colborne and definitely won't push Stajan out of the lineup.

Too bad, 'cause Backlund has shown spurts in the past. Just nothing sustained.
