With Jackman gone, Jones comes up and Abby is a man down. Lots of smaller skill guys down in Abby so I'm not surprised that they'd want a big forward to look after our young'uns. Good move.

As far as I can tell he was acquired with Calgary's pick, not the one from Anaheim

I like it, it addressed my biggest issue with the Jackman trade, which was the loss in toughness (Something the Flames desperately lack this year)
This looks like a trade up imo

This is perfect, he can protect Johnny Hockey in the spring.

Jackman isn't tough and is basically a large pylon at this point in his career. This kid is younger, meaner and tougher. I see no issue with the trade(s).

Flames really don't have a young enforcer in their prospect base. They now have a young 24 year old. Not a bad move for the heat, and maybe one day a good move for the Flames if he replaces McGratton.

Pretty minor, but just as stupid as the trade for Leblond a couple years back. Throwing away assets (albeit small) on crap that you can get for free anytime.

Reading that he's projected to be a Shawn Thornton type. Basically, an enforcer with some offensive skills. I'm okay with that.

As per Steinberg
Couldn't put him to Abby right away if we picked him up off waivers.
Does that mean if we picked him up, he would have to go through waivers again as a Flames before Abby?
he's a pending RFA, $660,000 NHL salary

The problem is you can't just get them for free with the way the CBA is. If the flames would have picked him up on waivers, they are stuck with him for 30 days on the big club. I guess you are correct that they could have just waited for the off season.

I read this move as the Flames saying they don't want Ferland to fight anymore, and want him to work on his development, so they brought in a different guy to handle the scrapping.

It's generally more well received than constantly trying to put it in the stink.

From watching McDermid in junior - I wouldn't expect some kind of ultra enforcer. He's more of a Prust type guy than someone who's going to win fights. He is a hard worker though... basically a younger Jackman.

Trade late picks for depth players and trade good players for early picks. Have to have some players in Abby when we do call up the young guys. I like it. Plus we got tougher and when Johnny is in Abby at the end of the season we have a guy to be a goon and protect him.
