Sylvia Browne dead at 77
Renowned psychic and scam artist Sylvia Browne has passed away.
Couldn't stand this woman, but still cant bring myself to be happy about a person's death. Still, she lived a long and very wealthy life, capitalizing on the pain and gullibility of those in a state of mourning.

Judging by her voice, she sure sounded like a chain smoker?

Remember when she accepted on Larry King Live? Then, of course, never actually did it. Dodged James Randi at every corner. Smart on her end of naturally but it's a shame so many people believe this garbage.
Hopefully James Van Praagh is next.

The comments on CNN are frikking gold.
I know there are people that are out there that are sad this woman has passed on, but man did a lot of people hate this old hag. She is getting exactly what she deserved posthumously. Just an absolute disgusting POS that preyed on gullible and weak minded people. If there is a hell, she is definitely got a front row seat reserved for her.

my god I love that man
side note, as the years pass i have a harder and harder time thinking of these victims as 'innocent vulnerable people who are taken by master scam artists'
if you look at say someone who devoutly reads a horoscope, the conversation about the credibility of such things is strictly avoided because of a somewhat willing suspension of disbelief.
These types of scammers are duping people who, more and more appear to me to be wrestling believers.
Then again i'm a pretty hardcore skeptic.
It's still real to me dammit!

I too am a hardcore skeptic but I have more sympathy for those that are "duped" by these sorts of people. People in vulnerable states desperately want to believe things that make them feel better, whether its a baseless fad diet, bogus seance, or quack alternative medicine. We do plenty of things to save people from themselves, like prohibiting drinking and driving and making many sorts of fraud illegal. Jailing these con artists would be a good next step.
Like illegal drugs, you can't cut off demand.

A fake and a fraud

In 2004, Miss Browne made headlines when she told Louwanna Miller on the talk show that her missing daughter Amanda Berry was 'not alive.'
|
Quote:
Following the psychic's words, Ms Miller walked away being '98 per cent' sure that her daughter was dead. She died of heart failure two years later.
Amanda was found alive nearly a decade later along with two younger women in the Cleveland home of her abductor Ariel Castrol.

This stuff is fun when it's a parlor game,.
I used to read tarot cards for fun, but when I realized how many people actually believed in that I had to quit.
Don't misinterpret this. A good reading (and it becomes a good reading just by sheer coincidence) can kickstart your thought process just like a good brainstorming session, or an inspirational piece of writing or work of art.
But to present it as a prediction or contact with the dead etc is just plain pathetic.

Sylvia Browne was a terrible human being. Preyed on the stupid and the vulnerable. She'll be missed.

Alleged psychic Mitchell heads to jail, is apologetic
http://doubtfulnews.com/2013/11/alle...is-apologetic/
Sylvia Mitchell, a New York City psychic convicted of conning clients for tens of thousands of dollars, was sentenced Thursday to 5 to 15 years in prison.
Mitchell must also pay restitution to two victims following her grand larceny conviction last month.
I hope we see more consequences for charlatans like these.
