The Sean "Moneyhands" Monahan

I'm not a season ticket holder but I would be pretty upset if they decided to send Monahan to the WJC after I paid all that money for tickets. Big reason to watch the Flames this year is Monahan.

If Monahan does go to the WJC, sure gives Backlund a chance to get off the fourth line for a bit. See what Backlund does with that opportunity.

Although I very much doubt that Monahan will be released fo the WJC.

I understand if the club needs him and they don´t let him go but I don´t really understand how detrimental one tournament can be to his development. He is going to miss what, 5-6 games? Shouldn´t be a big deal.

There's a different atmosphere and outlook to a tournament than playing in the NHL. I personally think it'd be good asset management to have Monahan play in the WJC while calling up someone like Corban Knight to give him a few games of NHL experience while Sean is away.

Depending on injuries, I'd let him go to the World Juniors. That way we could get a good look at Corban Knight or another young centre so we could see where we stand if we traded Stajan.

If Team Canada's camp starts on December 15 (which is when the USA camp starts), he would miss 12 games.

IF he goes to play in the tourney (which I don't think he should) it should be an opportunity for Knight / Granlund / Jones to get some time in the NHL.

Those kids deserve their chance.

Just wondering, when the flames are out and the heat most likely in the playoffs, can we send him down to the Heat? The whole 19 year old and chl-nhl agreement thing confuses me.
(thought about this when I read a little on the whole Grigorenko ahl conditioning stint thing being denied)

My guess is he'd still be too young to go to Abby. The 67s likely wouldn't be in the playoffs.

He can only go back down to The 67's and It would burn his first year of his elc. If he had been drafted out of anywhere else he could go to Abby like sieloffe

If he is playing at an competitive NHL level why let him go a step down? I am not sure I see any worth in playing with players who are not at his level.

I don't see how playing against teens instead of men would increase the risk of injury.

The only valid argument for not sending him to the WJC is to keep him in the Calder Trophy hunt. That one reason alone may be enough for him to stay up in the NHL.

I think that Sean should get to have some input. I think that they will make a decisions after hearing all the different parties. Who knows what they are actually thinking. It's all speculation until we hear from Feaster.

Personally, I'd rather see him stay. For one, I can't really picture myself watching many games without him in the lineup. For another, I'd like to see him stay in the Calder race.

Once a player's junior team is done playing for the season, he can be loaned to your AHL team for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs. This happens often, and depending on his age, the player can go back to junior again in the fall (this happened last season with Kulak).

The problem for Monahan's situation is that in order to be eligible to play in the AHL playoffs, a player must be below the NHL level (AHL, ECHL, College, or Junior) at the NHL Trade Deadline. Because of the CHL agreement, he can't be anywhere but the NHL or OHL at the Trade Deadline, so he won't be getting any AHL playoff time.

WJC knockout and medal games are a far better test of a young player's performance under pressure than game 38 of the NHL regular season for a non-playoff team. You want to see if a player can elevate his play under the spotlight in big games. The Flames aren't going to have any big games this year.
