As for the WJC, if the Flames feel that NHL competition and play is best for his development, Monahan should stay in the NHL. I imagine the same reasons the Flames gave for him staying in the NHL vs. returning to junior a month ago would also apply to the WJC.

With the main difference being that he can come back to the NHL after the 10 game WJC stint, whereas once he was returned to junior it was for the season.
Have a feeling if the tournament was in Canada and not Ufa, Russia they decision would be easier to let him go.

Sending Sean to the WJC should happen, I think it is a good development opportunity.
Grant Pollack on 960 right now is talking about this. He doesn't think he should go because he is more important to the Flames. Nobody can replace him, the STHs want to see him playing, etc.
Personally I don't care how we do while he is gone. If we were in a playoff race, sure keep him. We aren't, it isn't hurting the team.
He will be back after the tournament and will only be better playing at a high level and intensity.
I am a STH and I want to see him on the WJC team.

Last year was in Ufa. This year is in Sweden. I say let him go, keep him in the National Team pipeline.

He shouldn't go to the WJC cause he's not a junior player anymore.
Sean Monahan is a NHL player now.

I'm sure he'll get around to it once he grows into a more adult size, but I think that will take at least one offseason with some serious strength training.

I agree about needing to get used to playing against men and so far I have no issue with how he is progressing. I thought I read at the beginning of the season he was close to 200 lbs after a good off season of training. The coaches were really impressed in camp with his conditioning.
Still agree with you though. He seems to approach the game very methodically and learning how to use the body in the NHL compared to junior is just another step he seems to be making. He's not making big hits but I am starting to see him kind of rubbing guys out more.

Playing in the WJC is a little bit different from playing for the Ottawa 67s. More media coverage, more competition and a lot more pressure to succeed. I really can't see the WJC being bad for his development.

I also recall that he weighed in around 200lb's to start the season. This was a big reason why he wasn't sent back to junior. He's a centerman who already has the proper build to be successful in the NHL. I would be SUPER impressed if he's doing as well as he is weighing 20lbs less than his competition.
I'm not against sending him to Junior as it's never a bad thing to stomp the best players your age. He will get more international experience, recognition and have enjoyed an exciting, fresh tournament.
At the end of the day I think coaching should let Monahan decide. If it means a lot to him than it's not fair of management to keep him. This can become a great relationship builder for Monahan and the Flames.

Better than playing a regular shift in the NHL though?

There's a different atmosphere and outlook to a tournament than playing in the NHL. I personally think it'd be good asset management to have Monahan play in the WJC while calling up someone like Corban Knight to give him a few games of NHL experience while Sean is away.

Maybe not completely relevant, but just look at what getting cut from the USA team did for Gaudreau 2 years ago. Realized he needed to up his game and went on an amazing run that continues to this day.
This is a good measuring stick to see what area's he needs work on compared to others in his age group. If he realizes that he dominates in every facet of the game than he'll come back to the NHL more hungry and confident then ever (if even possible for this guy).

You don't send a player who is in the thick of a Calder trophy race to the WJC. Sorry, that's just dumb.

The only thing I would be concerned about when thinking of sending him to the WJC is the fact that he is second in all rookies in scoring, just 4 points and goals behind Hertl. You know SJ is gonna be rolling like the are all year and those 5 or so games extra Hertl gets could really separate the current spread between him and Monahan. I think a Calder trophy for not only the player but for the organization would be a huge deal and you have to keep Monahan up strictly for that reason if we find him in much the same position come WJC time.

Agreed. Calder for Monahan and the Flames > chance at WJC title.

I'm guessing one of his rookie bonuses centre around winning the Calder. If you were Monahan, would you rather get a better chance to earn more money, or would you rather partake in he WJC? Tough choice though for sure.
As a fan, I'd honestly rather watch him in the WJC.

Keep Monahan in the NHL or give him the choice. Not sure having him go back and play with junior players is the right move but not mine to make. He is on pace for about 55pts which would be incredible for a first year pro who made the team at 18.
I think the Olympic break is going to be key for Monahan to take a step back and charge up for the stretch drive. He likely will be playing heavy minutes after the flames move some vets.

I would rather him stay with the big club. He has proven he belongs and going to the World Juniors won't serve to develop his game.
Plus him not being there might give Jankowski a better chance of making the team... I know it's a long shot but I think it would mean more to Jankowski's development than it would to Monahan's development.

Yup, he was closer to 200 lbs coming out of camp.

And, good news, the 18-year-old took his summer seriously in other ways to help his cause. Working on his leg strength and core after he left Calgary, he packed on 11 pounds of muscle to help his efforts in the faceoff circle (which means he weighed in on Wednesday at an even 200).

Well, I picked that weight of 185 from the Flames site, but seems you can't trust that.
At 200, I agree, he should learn to be a little more physical.
