ya, no point in having your kids up in such a toxic environment this season. send them down, let them dominate their juniour/minor leagues and let this brutal season playout with whatever they can, without deterring their prospect development.

According to a well placed source, the NHL wouldn't approve Grigorenko's conditioning stint to Rochester. He will be heading back to Buffalo

I´d say
Hertl
Barkov
MacKinnon
Mahonen
Jones
Even though Hertl is playing with Thornton on the first line his point total is still impressive.
But to me the real winners here are Barkov and MacKinnon, really no competition. These guys are at least a year younger than the other rookies, both of them were just 17 couple of months ago. A year of development is huge at that age, imagine these guys next year. And they both already make their teammates better.
Nichuschkin turned 18 this year also but what I saw of him he really didn´t have an impact until he was moved to the first line with Benn and Seguin.

Makes sense. It doesn't seem right just to send him to the AHL for a conditioning stint when he's not coming back from an injury.

He doesn't have to clear waivers. Why not just send him down? Why did it have to be a conditioning stint. Am I missing something?

He's only 19 and was drafted out of the CHL, so they'd have to send him back to Quebec if they wanted to send him down.

When can you send a player that was drafted out of the CHL to the AHL? I thought they were elligible at age 19, as long as they turn 20 before December 31? I can't remember how it works.

Monahan and Hertl aren't having equally as good of seasons as Barkov or MacKinnon? I might be missing something but are Barkov or MacKinnon fighting for the scoring lead on their respective teams? Or in the thick of the battle for the rookies points Lead? Last I checked it was a two horse race between Hertl and Monahan.
And in Monahan's case, playing on a bad team should amplify his efforts. Outside of Barkov and FLA, those other rookies are all being bolstered by the quality of the team they are on.

Yes, but Grigorenko turns 20 in May, so he would have to go back to junior.

You´re talking about Calder race where age doesn´t factor in as much as points or performance. I was talking about who has been the most impressive rookie and what Barkov and MacKinnon are doing at the age 18 is more impressive (to me) than what Hertl or Monahan. Like I said, one year of development at that age is huge.
But yes, I should have put Monahan up there with Hertl. Hertl had that one huge game, otherwise they have been equally impressive and it looks like the race for Calder is between them. edit: Jones and Krug probably in the race
To put in perspective:
Rookie (pts) Team leader (pts)
Hertl (18) Pavelsky (22)
Monahan (14) Hudler (21)
Barkov (9) Fleichmann (12)
MacKinnon (12) Duschene (20)
They are all producing relatively at the same pace compared to the team leader. Difference is Barkov and MacKinnon are doing it a year younger.

yep. NHL turned it down because of that. No injury = no AHL conditioning stint for junior eligible players.

Didn't RNH get to play in the AHL as a 19 year old?

yeah but that was because of the lockout ... junior eligible players with previous NHL experience were allowed to play in the AHL during the lockout, if I remember correctly.

Nashville sure hit the jackpot with Seth Jones falling into their lap. I'm not saying he's better than MacKinnon but IMO Yzerman will regret passing him over for a small winger in Druin.

I am not so sure. Drouin had the highest hockey IQ coming into that draft and is considered an elite playmaker. To be able to get a player like that and pair him with the best goal scorer in the game who is still in his early 20's himself will pay off nicely for Tampa.
With how good Monahan is playing there could be an arfument made the Avs should have taken the Flames offer for 6, 22, 28 to get the top pick? Personally I am happy that trade did not happen. While I prefer MacKinnon to Monahan right now I am glad the Flames have Poirer and Klimchuck in the system
