Sorry, this quote just made me think of a team loading up to try and get McDavid with multiple lottery picks, only to have a team that was not the worst end up winning the lottery. I'd love the 30th place GM to step up to the podium after McDavid was already picked: "We are absolutely pissed off and crushed to select..."

Sean Monahan has scored more goals in the NHL this year than McDavid has in the OHL this year.

I could see us drafting first overall this year and/or next year, but I could also see us drafting outside the top 3/top 5 in the next two years.

I think this year and next year we have a better shot at the #1 pick than most want to think about. We won't start to do better for a few years yet

I could easily see us finishing last in the west. I just think we will likely finish ahead of Buffalo and probably Florida.

Ya, the sabres look like a train wreck but Florida looks better than they are. I think we will be really bad next year though

We'd be a whole lot worse if Cammalleri and Stempniak are jettisoned by the deadline. Outside of maybe Hudler they have been our best players this season, and the main reason we've won a few games. If they are dealt I'd say last place in the west is almost a certainty.

I think Ekblad is a better prospect as well. I get why scouts would prefer Jones for his skating, but Ekblad is a horse out there. There aren't many 16 year olds who anchor a defense and play all the time for a CHL team that ends up barely missing the Memorial Cup. He's a winner.

Jones is a Bouwmeester, Ekblad is a Shea Weber.

Calgary will be real bad for a few years.

We are in arguably the toughest division in the league and that alone will keep us near the bottom with all the losses to Van, SJS, Anaheim, Dallas, LA etc..

Top picks the next two years along with some strategic trading/drafting in later rounds and we may start to see real improvement in the 2015/2016 season after we select McDavid

I think McDavid ends up on an expansion team.

Expansion teams never get first overall picks, also, they haven't broken ground on a rink in Seattle yet and there's no way they'd hand a potential Crosby to Quebec.

If the NHL gets involved in any way, most likely destination would be New Jersey and the New York marketplace.

They did in a couple of the 90s expansions. Since the lottery was introduced they have been given 2 overall picks.

The rules are different every time the NHL expands. Bettman understands that the best way to avoid the horrific early years of an expansion team is to get them decent players.

I would be unsurprised if the 1 overall goes to an expansion team. Or they end up winning the lottery.

I'd guess Bettman's pet team, Phoenix.
