I don't know, Sweden's always seems to be a non-factor at major tournaments anyways.

So with the teams qualified the draw on Dec 6 should be straightforward right? France is the lowest ranked European team so they would go into Pot 3 with the Africans right?

Or will this draw be Platini'd somehow.

Pot 1: Brazil, Argentina, Colombia, Uruguay, Spain, Germany, Belgium, Switzerland
Pot 2: Holland, Italy, England, Russia, Bosnia, Greece, Portugal, Croatia
Pot 3: France, Chile, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Nigeria, Algeria, Cameroon
Pot 4: USA, Mexico, Honduras, Costa Rica, Japan, Korea, Iran, Australia

France must go into the group of Brazil, Argentina, Colombia or Uruguay
Chile and Ecuador must into the group of Spain, Germany, Belgium or Switzerland

Is this a joke? They finished third in 1994!

that's 20 years! That's 10 major tournaments ago!
That's like saying Bulgaria are good (finished 4th in 1994)

You wrote that they "always" seem to be a non-factor. 1994 is not that long ago.

They got into the second round in 2002.

QFs of Euro 2004.

Second round of 2006, where they lost to the host Germans.

They were eliminated in the group stages of Euro 2012. Hardly perennial under-achievers.

No. You just described the definition of perennial underachievers.

That being said, Portugal's resume isnt much more impressive.

Looks like Wayne Rooney was barely good enough to get into England's squad let alone Germany's B squad.....

Portugal since 1994: A Euro final (yes they hosted) a WC semifinal and another Euro semifinal. At some point in those tournaments I thought, hey Portugal could actually win this thing. Last Euros they lost a penalty shootout with Spain. Spain has been crushing everyone. There's a huge difference between a semifinal and a quarterfinal.

I've never once thought that with Sweden.

I know you're not a Portugal fan, but that's just false.

Portugal

EURO 2000-Semi Final loss to eventual Winners. Beat England and Germany in group stage.
WC 2002-Out in Group Stage(embarrassed)
EURO 2004-Lost in Final
WC 2006-Lost in Semi Final to France
EURO 2008-Qtr Final loss to Germany
WC 2010-Round of 16 loss to eventual winners(1-0 Loss to Spain)
EURO 2012-Get out of Group of Death, and lose on PK's to Spain in semis(again, eventual winners)

1 Final, 3 Semis, 1 QTR, 1 Round of 16, 1 Group Stage Elimination, 0 tournaments where they didn't qualify.

Sweden

EURO 2000-Out in Group Stage with only 1pt.
WC 2002-Round of 16 loss to Senegal
EURO 2004-Qtr Final loss on PK's to Holland
WC 2006-Round of 16 loss to Germany
EURO 2008-Out at Group Stage
WC 2010-Didn't qualify
EURO 2012-Out at Group Stage

0 Finals, 0 Semis, 1 QTR, 2 Round of 16, 2 Out at Group Stage, 1 no qualify.

I'll certainly listen to the argument that Portugal can't make that final step, but Portugal's resume isn't more impressive than Sweden's is just wrong.

ZURICH—Croatia defender Joe Simunic is set to be punished by FIFA for leading a pro-Nazi chant with fans after his team qualified this week for the World Cup.

FIFA says in a statement on Friday that “disciplinary proceedings have been opened concerning the case” involving Simunic.

Surprised no one mentioned this, conisdering it's equivalent to, say, someone from the Germany team doing the same thing with "Sieg Heil!".

I thought a lot was being made out of very little. As far as I understand he started chanting 'For The Motherland.'

Thats pretty innocuous really, I mean, its a pretty generic slogan even if it was linked to a Nazi-related party. I dont know.

I mean, are Croatians not allowed to refer to their country as 'The Motherland' ever again because a Nazi organization did 50 years ago?

I probably dont have all the facts though, if FIFA is actually doing something about it then there must be something there.

The salute was used during the WW II by Ustase, a Croatian fascist and terrorist organization that killed somewhere between 300 000 and 800 000 Serbs and other enthic minorities during the war. Most of them in the Jasenovac concetration camp.

See how some might find it offensive?

By that logic, we should all say "Seig hail" after Flames win because it litterally means "hail to victory".

EDIT: I don't meant to turn this thread into a Nazi thread, but things like this have no place in football. Let's see how serious FIFA is with this "no racism" thing.

Well, yeah, but it'd be weird to have an entirely non-German crowd celebrating in German.

I didn't realize that he used that organization's salute.

I think you should brace yourself for sincere disappointment on that score.

yeah, according to Blatter: just the fact that the teams shake hands before a match proves that there is no racism.

I'm watching the live press conference from Brazil.

The Pots have been allocated. Platini has his hands all over it. Instead of France being the worst European team and going into the African pot, one of the 9 non-seeded Europeans will be drawn seperately and moved into the African Pot. So essentially France is now on equal footing with Holland.

I have no idea why Brazil would agree to this, now it is possible to have tough European team be moved to "Pot 2" and 25% chance of going into Brazil's group.

Can have a group like this.

Brazil
Italy
Holland
Japan
