Could the biggest reason for Johnny to stay this year be the Hobey Baker? It would likely mean millions more in early negotiations (first contract post ELC).
By playing this year, he will be more developed for his first year of hockey, and with a Hobey Baker to his resume, that second contract goes up.

I don't think it makes much of a difference. Especially because everyone knows he's the best player in college hockey, regardless of having a hobey baker or not. He was last year too and probably should have won, but my understanding is that it generally goes to a senior.

Winning the Hobey Baker wouldn't affect the 2nd contract at all. They way he plays for the first 3 years of his contract will decide that. I think the biggest reason for him staying the 3rd year was to play with his brother and to get stronger before making the jump to pro hockey.

What's with the talk Johnny won't sign with the Flames? This guy was on the Fan this morning saying he doesn't believe he will sign with the Flames. I believe it was opinional but I have heard this from too many people to just dismiss and I hope there isn't any smoke here.
I feel good that Burke and his connections with US hockey will be a good influence but at this point but until he signs any contract with the Flames he's not a Calgary Flame.

The guys exact words were "I have nothing to base it on, just a gut feeling he won't sign"
Not exactly a news story .

i don't understand, didn't he come out and outright state he would sign in CGY when the time is right this past prospects camp?
any story about this guy is followed up with 2 responses inevitably:
1) too small for the nhl
2) won't sign in cgy

When did I say it was a news story or say it was anything other than his opinion?

That means the guy has just as much credibility as one of the paranoid negative Nelly's on this board constantly posting about Johnny Hockey not signing. He just had a forum to air his concerns to stir up the masses.

Lamebert is an antagonist. He just says what he thinks will piss people off. He also wrote the big article about how it would be utterly stupid to keep Monahan at the NHL level this season. So far, so wrong.
The silly thing about the "he won't sign" reverse-fantasy is the last time someone didn't sign with us, we got picks and prospect for him and he's still toiling in the AHL and since traded from the team we traded him to. IF (and I really doubt this) Johnny never wants to play in Calgary- we will get compensated for him.
Prophetic doom and gloom aside, Boston College is back on the ice today as they take on Havard @ 7pm EST. Gaudreau and Arnold are 1 and 2 in team scoring and lead the team with +12s.
Listen online (great analysts) or hopefully they put up a stream, as they randomly do.
Go Johnny Go.
GO ArnY!

Guys it's not doom and gloom or being a negative Nelly to point out that right now the Flames only have his rights. Until he signs a contract he's not a member of the organization. Nobody is saying that it's a done deal he isn't going to sign but on the other hand nobody can say it's a done deal that he will sign.
I would hope that he would sign with the Flames but who really knows what his parents and agent is telling him as we are seeing guys like Knight and Schultz make decisions that they felt best for themselves and while that doesn't mean Johnny will go this route it's definitely something that isn't out of the realm of possibility.

Exactly, just like your lungs just took in a breath, but nobody can say they will take in the one after that, or the one after that!
Don't sweat the small stuff bro, enjoy the fact the Flames have an amazing prospect.
And funny enough I just made everyone focus on their breathing :P Take a few deep breaths now, feels good.

It's doom and gloom to speculate that for some unforetold reason our top prospect won't sign with us. Especially since 80% of Collegiate athletes sign with their rights holding organizations, and of those that don't, its generally the GM that doesn't offer them a contract. There is one J. Schultz in a 100.
The whole conversation is based on a fantastically slim possibility.
For all of you who want to bank on that 1% possibility, that's fine. But at least acknowledge that evidence is overwhelmingly against you.

Poirier isn't going to sign with the Flames, He is going to sign with Montreal.
Klimchuk isn't going to sign with the Flames, He is going to sign with Edmonton.
Look what I can do!

They can't. That's not at all the same position as what Johnny is in.
I think Johnny will sign with Calgary, but this post makes no sense. These players re enter the draft of they don't sign...

I believe Johnny will sign.
However, it's not 1‰, and isn't fantastical.
There is the fact that Johnny is not your average college prospect, and the fact that not signing with your team is used more this last couple years than ever before. Schultz only? What about Knight? How many of the other trade and signed players were traded because they didn't want to sign. I'm sure there's more. Also, the vast majority of those college players signed by their rights holders were not highly sought after like Johnny will be.
It's not very likely based on history and what's been said, but it's not out of the realm of possibility

You've never struck me as someone who lets others opinions sway them at all. So why does Lamberts musing have you anymore concerned than any other CPer's?
You would think Gaudreau was a pending UFA this year with all the concern over this.

Everything Johnny has said, says he'll sign with the Flames. If he wants to turn pro in 2014, he has to sign with the Flames. If he goes back to college for his final year, than I might start to worry a bit but my guess, he'll sign after this college season is over.

Holy crap. Do you guys actually listen to the Fan? Ryan Pinder said he doesn't think Gaudreau would sign if he goes back for his 4th year. Lambert said he would sign this year because he has nothing left to prove in NCAA.
Jeebus.
