Awesome.
Also if you are Johnnie Gaudreau, would you still sign with the Calgary Flames if Bob Hartley is still coaching this team at the time he needs to make the decision? If I am Gaudreau, I wouldn't... he is a skilled but smallish young player.

I can see that, but the kid is still, well...a kid...with a certain skill set. Baertschi has been nothing special this season, and personally I haven't been that impressed, but it's still odd to see him sitting in the press box while other players aren't living up to their role either.

There's more to this, there has to be. All we can do is propose ideas, speculate, and make educated guesses until the truth can come to light. I wouldn't be so dismissive of that aspect of discussion.
That isn't entirely correct - there are things that the media can do to get more information such as asking the right questions:

"Bob, what specific feedback did you give to Sven on why you decided to scratch him?" To date, we have heard the unspecific "3 zone" garbage.

"Sven, what are you interactions with Hartley like? How many 1on1 meetings have you had? What has Bob told you specifically to improve? Did Bob talk to you as to the reason why you were scratched?"

I did find it interesting that when the Edmonton media asked Yakupov how much interaction and feedback he had from Eakins, his response was "not much". While Yakupov does have a part of play for the debacle in Edmonton, there is plenty of stink to go around.

stop digging 7 of his 25 shift were in the 3rd period.

1st period 9 shifts 5:23
2nd period 9 shifts 5:45
3rd period 7 shifts 6:01

He wasn't on the ice with the goalie pulled..... Stempniak was out there instead. If Baertschi was out there at the end and did as poorly as Stemps he would be sat for at least 2-3 games.

There's also 'smoke' emanating from some reports published here in the past with Sven's displeasure in having to attend the rookie camp and being reticent about his flat performance during said camp.

To me, that points to some possible entitlement issues on behalf of the player. Seems worthy of speculation...

Even if we hold the media accountable in siphoning out more information, the Yakupov example isn't exactly a prime one to use here. "Not much" is just as shrouded as "3 zones". We just aren't going to get an in-depth explanation and description of what is going on behind the scenes.

Could the media probe deeper? Sure. Are we likely to get anything of substance out of? I would wager probably not.

Pure speculation, but perhaps Sven has some entitlement issues and a bit of an attitude about being held accountable. While on the surface it does appear that he is being singled out, there has to be some underlying problems that can't all be laid at Hartley's feet.

I was thinking that it could be a maturity issue as well. When Hartley talks about there being no room for "kids", I don't think he is strictly saying it from an age point of view.

Sven seems like a good guy, but I do wonder how ready he was to be a professional hockey player. We saw the same thing with some players during the last young guns era when some of our young players took things too casually and didn't hate losing enough. I see a lot of the same traits in Baertschi. He has loads of skill, but he doesn't play like a player whose trying to impress like the next game could be his last before being sent down.

I would agree that sven hasn't been great. He often tries to force passes or try a fancy move and loses the puck. However, I think he has been getting better every game and has really started to be making offensive chances. This team isn't very good and the priority should be developing prospects. When burke commented on keeping monahan up he said he needs to play sixteen minutes a game. This should also apply to sven, and he should also get some pp time to get his confidence up. If Hartley is going to keep him in his doghouse then I'd prefer sven to get sent down and develop properly under ward.

Sven clearly is doing something he shouldn't be doing because it really doesn't make sense for Hartley to keep benching him when he's should be the type of player Hartley wants on the ice. Monahan isn't getting this treatment, so why is Sven?

If Sven isn't being committed to the system or having an entitlment sense, then Hartley is doing the right thing keeping him in check. Don't want Sven to get around with bad habits which will hurt him in the long term.

Burke/Feaster should give Peter Laviolette a call.

Nope, Feaster needs to make sure the godfather of his son has a nice Nest Egg. Can't fire him.

Just saw the projected lines for tonight in Winnipeg. Baertschi out. Jackman on the second line with Monahan and Hudler. Berra back in net. This is the response to what went wrong in Edmonton??

It is a rebuild year but how long does the losing streak go with such inane personnel decisions before we get to point out that the Emperor has no clothes. Hartley is living on borrowed time. May as well be sooner rather than later.

Also, don't get me wrong - I like Berra, but what does Ramo have to be thinking? Look at how short his leash has been. It 's just another example of the arbitrary inconsistency Hartely shows in his evaluation of players. Doesn't take long to lose a team acting like that.

I really hope this doesn't happen but the way Hartley is coaching it wouldn't surprise me.

Agree. They are a package deal. If one goes, so does the other. I do think Laviollette would be a much better option than Hartley though.

In terms of the ludicrousness of the original argument, it is.

I think the Gaudreau reactions are hilarious. One situation has absolutely nothing to do with the other. TTC actually gave me the idea for the Baertschi/Hartley/Gaudreau drinking game. I only post the gifs to emphasize how often that reaction comes up.

This is just getting crazy now, the whole team craps the bed and he sits Sven?
He wasn't noticeably worse than anyone else on the ice and used to be one of this franchises bright spots.
Last year it was all about giving Sven the opportunity to play his game and wow us with his skill and hard work.
This year it seems to be about using him to make a point to the rest of the team. Frankly I've had enough of Hartley,
his ridiculous lines and his joke of meritocracy.

Is it too much to ask for the Flames, now in their first official year of rebuilding, to conduct a wide reaching interview process for a General Manager and Coach that have no current affiliation with the organization to help guide this rebuild?

That's my problem here.

All the decisions are made through the lens of the previous terrible decisions having been made.

The lineage goes back to Darryl Sutter now. Is it too much to ask for a clean break; a fresh start?

Go outside the organization and interview candidates. See what is out there for GMs and coaches. Just TALK to them and see if maybe there is a better alternative to a guy who got the job based on his 'interim' basis, and a coach who is that guy's kids Godfather who hadn't coached an NHL game in nearly a decade? Can the Flames at least try something that doesn't reek from the outset?

Bring in a new GM and Coach. If they have the same problems with Baertschi the current ones do now then so be it, but don't make me second guess every decision made by this group with the trailing perspective of ineptitude. I don't care about the wins and losses this season, I care about setting the franchise up for long term success. If the rumblings that they are already looking to add bigger pieces is true, the writing should be on the wall for Burke the same way it was for Davidson when Howson started to look to trade their first rounder last season. Canned before he could do any more harm.

I know he is flavour of the month right now, but if the Oilers don't pick up Regier, the Flames should be making a heavy push for him. Having a guy like that in control of trades would give me a much better feeling about the direction of the team than having Feaster pulling the trigger, even if he is a glorified yes-man at this point.

Burke might be the first step in that direction, and I hope the makeup of the front office and bench staff is completely different by next season.
