I know this is a rebuild and losses are to be expected. What I don't get is why our system has changed so much since earlier in the season.
Our defensive style of play is brutal. Guys look like they are thinking way too much and the closest guy to the puck isn't allowed to get it. Numerous times I have seen the potential for some quick pressure on a puck but that player backs off and waits for "the designated" guy to go in which frees up time and space for the other team.

D backing in... early in the season we were standing guys up as they entered the zone. We now back right into our goalies lap which has allowed the other teams to slow down and wait for support. If we are going to have 2 guys low in the O zone then we cant allow rushes against to slow down and find trailers.

Perhaps I am frustrated from the last 5 or so games and what appears to be a different team. Am I nit picking at the things mentioned above or is it blatantly obvious to other CPers

Honestly I feel we were winning a few games at the start of the year because a lot of teams were still trying to find their groove. Hartley had a crazy hard training camp and their was a lot of energy surrounding this team. Overtime, that tends to dull especially with the crazy schedule of the NHL. It's up to the coaching staff to make sure the team still fights through and plays with enough heart/energy to compete and IMO they have down an absolute brutal job. Feel free to bump my "Is Bob Hartley the right coach for this team" thread. I considered doing it after he put Jackman on a line with Hudler and Monahan while he sat Sven, but hey... nows a good a time as any.

The ability to stand guys up as they enter comes down a lot to reading the play well. For them most part our D doesn't have great instincts in that area. Brodie is a work in progress, Gio is out, Smid helps but overall you've got a group that is probably the worst blueline, or close to it in the league.

I don't disagree with the sentiment, but I think the forwards play a role too.

It's hard for the D to stand up when the forwards are often out of position or out to lunch.

Yup - this is a good point too. The D gets put in lousy situations - and then get the blame.

I agree with "close to it", but "probably the worst"? No way. That's likely the group up north.

Worst case Ontario, we outsuck everybody en route to glorious Ekblad.
Or we could win a few, which would be nice.

Part of the issue is we have played a really tough schedule to open the season. As we play a more balanced sched going forward we will appear better.

The Flames NHL team has one of the worst talent groups amongst the forwards, one of, if not the worst defense in the league, and no starting goalie.
Once teams started to get a book on us, we were hooped. We are going to be one of the worst teams in the league. It blows.

The problem I worry about the most is for fans to revolt because of this. People need to be patient. This is the growing pains that everyone was talking about. In order to build a legit cup contender, we need to suck for a while.

The reason fans may revolt is becbecause its a situation that happened later then it should have. I am one who opposes the revolt because at least the rebuild is finally happening sooner than later.

Fans seemed pretty patient tonight. Not much booing despite being down 6-1. Even a go flames go chant.
