Default Anyone with the 411? re: major LRT accident on 7th Ave

For the first time all year I decided to use the C-Train to go to and from the game tonight. After coming out and getting on the train at Victoria Park, they announced no trains we're allowed through the Downtown area because a major accident had occured on one of the lines on 7th Ave.

I decided to walk past it and hope to catch a train on the other side. Once I got to 7th, I could see the rescue lights but I was quite a few blocks west of the accident. Does anyone know what happened? It sounded very serious, they instantly had buses set up as C-Train Shuttles on the west side of the accident, anyhow. I suppose the only kind of accident that could happen down there is involving a pedestrian. I certainly hope no one was seriously hurt. Anyone know anything further?

Tonight was the only night all year that I decided to take the train as well. I didn't see what happened, but I got on the NW train at 7st and everyone there was saying a Flames fan had jumped in front of a train. I don't think it's true, but someone definately was hit by a train. I hope everyone is alright.

On the news @ 11:30 they said that someone was 'pushed' in front of/in-between the train. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Details were still pretty sketchy, they said the people involved knew each other (even suggested they might be brothers). They said there were lots of witnesses and they'd have more in the morning.
Tragic

Dead at the scene? What a sad, sad set of events.

Puts things into perspective after being at a game tonight that everyone is making such a big deal about.

Tragic stuff.

On a positive note Citybeat says all is quite on 17th Ave tonight. Very happy that no one decided to take out their frustration with the Flames losing by doing something dumb down on the mile.

They also say that he was arguing with another man; possibly his brother, and after the guy went between 2 cars the other man tried to pull him up but was too late.

I guess it's unclear if he was pushed, or decided to jump and the other guy tried to save him. Pretty sad really.

Man, that is brutal. I can't imagine the regret and grief the guy is going through. He lost his brother, and has to live with the fact he was responsible.

Man Dies After Being Hit By C-train
May, 04 2006 - 6:00 AM

CALGARY/AM770CHQR - Calgary police are investigating after a man was killed Wednesday night around 10:30 p.m. at the City Hall C-train Platform.
Police Duty Inspector Keith Pollock says it appears two brothers were jostling each other on the platform, when one of them fell into the gap between two LRT cars as the train arrived.
The man died instantly.
Pollock says the man's brother tried to pull him back in time, but failed to do so.
The platform had to be shut down for hours as police investigated.

I'm very proud of the city for this. We really proved we are the class of hockey fans in Canada.

On another note, sad stuff indeed. Feel bad for the guy who pushed him too, as it sounds like an accident.

What a horrible thing to have happen. I can't even imagine the guilt/remorse that the surviving brother is going through right now. This is one of those incidents that really help put things into persepective. My heart goes out to the family as well as those who witnessed the tragic accident.

CITYBEAT - CITY OF CALGARY PRESS RELEASE

At about 10:00 PM on Wednesday the 3 May 2006 police and EMS
received several calls regarding an incident on the City Hall
C-Train platform. Initial investigations indicate that two
brother’s ages, 49 and 40, were walking on the platform as an
eastbound C-Train was pulling into the platform at City Hall.
There was some jostling between the brothers and one fell
against the moving C-Train. This caused him to fall to the
platform but his upper body fell into the gap between the
first and second car of the three car train. He was then hit
and dragged for a short distance by the train but was crushed
between the train and the platform. EMS pronounced the
younger brother dead at the scene. There were numerous
people on the platform at the time but it was not over
crowded. The brothers had been at the hockey game and had
walked from the Saddledome to the train station.

Due to the unusual nature of this incident a joint
investigation is underway between the Traffic Section and the
1 District GIU detectives.

I find this story incredibly disturbing. I can't even begin to imagine the guilt the brother is experiencing.

Yeah, terrible.

I wonder if these guys had a few beers at the Dome? Don't jump on me, but very often there is booze involved when these things happen.

I've also seen guys goofing around on the platform; especially near where the last car stops. Which means when the front of the train goes by you have dozens of tonnes moving at ~30-40 km/h at that point.

I say this as a bit of a warning to everybody else out there; be careful when goofing around with tonnes of steel whizing within a foot of where you are standing.
