Next bold move: J Schultz signed to $5.75M AAV extension through 20-21.
Here's the payment breakdown:
25% divided among 16 Eastern conference teams.
25% divided among 7 Central division teams.
50% divided among 6 other teams in Pacific division.
Opposing team reserve the right to sit him in the pressbox if they feel Schultz may actually be a threat. In other words, Schultz will play all 82 games.

It's times like these that I just love the fact we do prospect rankings. So easy to discredit two players traded to the Oilers, but when you can look back to July and August and see they were ranked 11th and 17th on the prospect list it isn't a stretch to say the Flames dealt two second tier prospects for a top four dman.
I've been away all weekend so I'm sure this has been said ... but I can't for the life of me understand this from an Oilers perspective. They must really really like one of the two Calgary players because their D is thin and Smid was one of the only sure thing defenders they had.
Tanking?
But on the same day they go out and add to goaltending?
So strange.
From what I can tell from listening to the interviews and analysis of the trade I do think they really like Brossoit in particular. Obviously he played in the same building and MacTavish talked about getting the opinion of the former GM of the Oil Kings.
Sounds like the Oilers decided goaltending was a massive organizational issue and the trade gets them goaltending for the future (Brossoit) and immediate goaltending via Bryzgalov and get the cap relief they needed to sign him. Lot's to like with Brossoit as he's shown bounce back ability and he also is extremely fit for the position. But I agree with those who say he was 5th on our depth chart right now and not as highly thought of a prospect as Berra, Gillies or Ortio from the Flames perspective. So we dealt from positions of strength.
But yeah overall a confusing trade for them as they trade away the type of player and type of character they need more of. Love it. And the Oilers fan that I know and respect the most hated the deal.
I do think Horak has been underrated by many people commenting on the trade. Obviously by non-Flames fans in particular but surprisingly underrated by a few Flames fans. I think he likely shakes out as a very strong 3rd line type player. But the Oil can use more smart, two-way players. Horak has looked physically stronger every year. Read on HF a ton that people think he's an undersized, soft centre but to me he's average sized at worst and plays stronger on the puck than people were giving him credit for. And I think Roy is not really much of a prospect to speak of and the Oil were ready to cut bait with him so it makes it a true 2 for 1 from their perspective. Horak was just unlucky IMO to have Monahan and then Colborne jump ahead of him and the addition of Knight and continued development of Reinhart meant we were suddenly very deep at centre. I think Horak will be a good NHLer and has a much better chance at achieving that in EDM. Clearly wasn't a Hartley favourite after being a Sutter favourite as Horak himself points out. If he wins Eakins trust wouldn't surprise me if he can secure some sort of 3rd line role or perhaps even later a 2nd line where he shows those Oilers how to actually play some defense.

It will be a dark day for Flames fans if the Oilers ever gas the old boys club and bring in someone with half a clue. The Oilers are making the Flames rebuild bearable.
I worry about the same thing but in fairness we really shouldn't. They need to get a new President and GM (who's available?), scouting staff, entire coaching staff and who knows what else. It would take them at least 5 years to fix that club if they started today and we both know that they aren't starting anytime soon.
Who knows, maybe Katz will pay Scotty Bowman and Ken Holland 10M each to take over the team and they could fix it in 3.

In all honesty I think Kevin Lowe is going to fade out of the Hockey Ops side at some point this year and Messier takes over with MacT remaining GM. He will continue the Old Boys Club leadership up there.
I honestly do not think Kevin Lowe will survive this year. Reading Oilers fans online they are nearing revolt mode. They hate their own team more than Flames fans hate the Canucks and the finger is pointed directly at Lowe
Capgeek is well aware of the issue... the first paragraph on their front page is:
All 2013-14 numbers are estimates based on the best transaction information available. Averaged performance bonus amounts are completely rolled back, meaning teams potentially exceeding the bonus cushion (Boston, Edmonton, Colorado, Florida) may have less cap space than indicated. The maximum amount of long-term injury relief is also provided, meaning teams in LTI situations may have slightly less cap space than indicated. The "cap space" column indicates cap space available at season's end if today's roster remains unchanged, while AAV Today and AAV Deadline indicate potential cap space. Roll over the question marks in the table header for more information.
They also put stars and little ? mouseovers that say the cap space is not accurate if the team is over the bonus cushion.
Except they show Edmonton with millions of dollars of cap space when that isn't the case. Big discrepancy. In theory they have cap space. In theory. But in theory communism works.

Maybe get a new owner that doesn't have a stiffy for Lowe.
I don't think Katz would have a clue who to replace Lowe with. If he replaces him with Messier that will be a joke. That team needs an enema, not more of the old guard.
Bryzgalov, Dubnyk and Labarbera are all UFAs - they probably only re-sign one (and possibly none)
Bachman is an RFA
Then they have Bunz and Brossoit, as well as Tuohimaa (whoever that is)
If Bryzgalov doesn't work out, I could see them throwing the keys to either Bunz or Brossoit as early as this year or next year at the latest.
And if they don't fix their team defense, those poor kids don't stand a chance.
It is not difficult to imagine scenarios whereby that organization completely destroys their entire organizational depth before they figure things out.

Wow, you put unready young goalies behind that defense and they'll have worse post traumatic stress syndrome then a vietnam vet.
I know Mac-T and Lowe are stupid, but they can't be that stupid.

Yep. They did try to acquire Schneider. They likely didn't anticipate Dubnyk being so bad this season.

It was certainly a deal worth making for the Flames, but I guess I side on the minority and think more highly of Broissoit than Gillies and Ortio. Time will tell. Berra really isn't a valid comparison since he's older and won't be under team control for too much longer.

I also really liked Brossoit, but I like the other prospects a bit more. Tough to gauge them so early in their careers, but that is how I shake it down. I understand how you can place Brossoit first, however.
I do think Berra is a valid comparison - and even Ramo. Right now without a doubt, they are ahead of Brossoit in the depth department. If either of them prove to be potential long-term solutions, Calgary will act appropriately. It isn't like Calgary will be in a situation where they won't be able to lockup any of their goaltenders to a long-term deal if they wanted to, if there ends up being one that would warrant it.
Gotta give to get is what it boils down to, our D corps is pretty weak and our young guys aren't there yet. Smid is young enough that he isn't a wasted spot on D

OKLAHOMA CITY GOAL! Welcome to the #OKCBarons Roman Horak! Nice rebound goal at 1:46 to give the Barons a 2-1 lead.

The way I see it the Flames got a Giordano type D (less the offense) for a bunch of mid prospects who were never going to make an impact on the Flames. Horak forsure, Brossoit an arguement "could" be made.
