From my perch in the stands I thought Ferland was a beast all night. Made a terrific pass through a defender on Street's goal and had a couple of dangerous rushes. Mixed it up a lot early in the game, very surprised him and Brennan didn't drop the mitts after their first shift. Really hope he develops into a NHL player!

Corbin Knights goal was a beauty. He was a trailer on the play - the puck finds him in the high slot and he hesitates and drags it past a defender before snapping it top-corner.

Granlund's goal on the penalty shot was effortless. Marlies goalie was Sparks - never heard of him but I guess he's the second-string guy.

Only one ref working this game, and I thought quite a bit got missed. Is that normal for the AHL?

Nice to see Ferland with some offensive production. Hope that continues.

No longer Toonie beers, but occasionally they'll have $1 hot dog nights.

Something about the city bitching and complaining that $2 beers is unsafe.

It's more or less a crap shoot as to whether there'll be one or two refs working the game. I'd say it's more common to have one ref than two.

Such a fun game to watch.

I have nothing more to add that hasn't already been said.

Markus Granlund is so freakin' nifty with the puck. All he does it create. Corban Knight's snipe that hit the Gatorade right out of the bottle made me drop my jaw. Sigalet looked back at me and all we said was, "wow."

Can't believe they're on a seven game win streak. This is a real treat right now.

It amazes me that a player with the skillset of Ferland went 18 straight games to start his pro career without a point. I guess that shows you how important opportunity is for these young players, and the confidence boost it gives them when they are given that role. His hands for a "big man" are high end.

There is a ton to like about this team.. and that shot by Knight was drool worthy.

Though this is only highlights, what seems to be a huge difference this year is that the kids are the ones doing the heavy lifting. Haven't been able to catch a game yet this season, but that seems to be the case this year for the Heat.

Nemisz looked pretty dangerous a few times in the highlights. Is he looking better this year than last?

Damn - beat me to it. I was just going to say that was a great individual effort by Nemisz on the Billins goal. That's what he needs to do more often.

Honestly can't remember the last time our AHL affiliate had this many promising prospects on it.

Like Calgary4Life posted, many 1st and 2nd year pros carrying a good chunk of the mail for this team....and getting the job done.

I don't think that's ever happened

No, he really isn't. Lamb has had a very strong year so far.

They touched on this at the start of Saturday's broadcast. They said Saturday was the first time so far this season the Heat will be playing under the 1 ref system. So it's looking like they are having 2 refs more often this year.

Seeing those highlights, Granlund looks like his speed is improving by a small amount. If he even becomes an average or slightly below average skater, he has the offensive talent to become a top 9 NHLer without any difficulty. Plus it would be nice to get someone that's good in the shoot outs for a change.

Forgot to mention that I met Ryan Walter at the Houte coffee kiosk. That man has a beefy handshake, lemme tell you.

He was showing off his '86 stanley cup ring, jokingly told my wife could touch it but not me, because I earlier told him I was a Flames fan. Seemed like a really cool guy.

He's an awesome president. He's done everything in his power to grow interest, but Abbotsford's just a no-fun city that would rather stay home than go out and enjoy themselves.

I mean c'mon, how many times can you go to an AHL game and get to meet an NHL legend. He's done this franchise a lot good, but the fans haven't done him all that good.

Just move the team to Calgary. Play at that WinSport arena. I bet you get close to (if not a full) guaranteed sellout every time.

Nah screw that. Very sweet deal for the Flames that Canucks fans' tax dollars are being used to subsidize the cost of developing Flames prospects.

Enjoy the irony of those same prospects destroying the Canucks in a few years time.

So, based on early returns, who is most likely to get the call ups when the roster spots open up with the trades of veterans coming? It is likely that the Flames move Stajan, Cammalleri, Jackman and Stajan up front, and then Butler, Russell and Smith on the blueline. Of those I really think the only two worthy of potentially staying around, and receiving an extension, are Stempniak and Russell. But if all of those players are sent out in trades, and nothing but prospects and picks come back in return, who is likely to come up?

Stajan - Knight
Cammalleri - Granlund
Stempniak - Hanowski
Jackman - Ferland
Butler - Wotherspoon
Russell - Sieloff

Comments from the Heat watchers?

Russell is hardly a vet.

...and Hanowski I would say. However, not to replace Stempniak, but to replace Jackman in a fourth line role for now.
