I wouldn't be surprised if Bryz only signed in Edm because no one else wanted him, and if he plays decent, he signs somewhere else at the end of the season.

If Bryzgalov is going to spend a week in the AHL, then he won't sign a NHL contract until after the AHL stint is over or he has to clear waivers to be assigned there.

He should be able to do a conditioning stint.

Looks like you are right... for some reason I thought a player had to be injured for a period of time before a conditioning stint can be assigned.

My guess is that they (and Bryz himself) hope he shows he's still a decent NHL goalie (and with the team in front of him, suitors will have a harder time deciphering this) the next 50+ games, and the Oilers get something/anything for him at the March 5th deadline by a team looking for some goalie depth.

I think it's more likely Bryz is using this as a one year redemption deal, so he can hopefully put up some decent stats to get a multi-year deal elsewhere. No way he's looking to stay in Edmonton long term.

This is such a sad signing. There is nothing bold about this move... It's a low risk, low reward signing. He couldn't make it on an ECHL tryout but the oilers will sign him right now. Rather than fix their defensive issues... They think this guy will solve all their problems? I hope he gets lit up even worse than their other goalies are.

The Oilers move a solid heart and soul kind of defenseman, who is young and locked into a decent cap hit for 3 more years, so that they could sign a goalie that not a single team in the league would offer a contract to.
And they signed him for one year, which makes sense from a risk perspective.

However, it is also likely that Bryzgalov is just there for the season. He is likely looking at this as an opportunity - a stepping stone to get back into the league.

They gave up Smid - to their rivals - for a rental on a head-case goaltender.

 never change Oilers!

No, he wasn't!

Roloson had a great playoff run, signed a multi-year deal, and then promptly looked once again to be the slightly above average starting goaltender that he always was.

Bryz is an above average goalie still IMO. The flames should have signed him, philly was the worst possible market he could've went to but he got $$$.
I wouldn't be laughing at this deal if I were a die hard flames fan. Flames missed out.

At least for the short term he is going to change the media "story" about the Oilers.

This could really help take the pressure off of some of their young guys who are wilting under the scrutiny which is increasing in intensity every day.

Bryzgalov was bad in Philly. Not average, certainly not above average but bad.

What exactly did the Flames miss out on? At best Bryzgalov is maybe a 15-20th goalie in the NHL and that isn't close enough to get the Flames into the play-offs so best case scenario they get a few more wins and a 8-10 draft pick rather than 1-5 draft pick. And that is best case scenario, more likely he comes in sucks and takes time away from finding out what Ramo or Berra are.
