I am late to the party... Pretty mixed feelings. Smid is ok and a decent asset. Have a lot of attachment to Brossoit though, he has the confidence and even keeled personality of an nhl starter and all the physical tools to be one. I don't really like horak that much.

The biggest thing for me is that I'm not liking trading prospects for vets, the flames will not make the playoffs so I'd rather have seen them pluck somebody off waivers and just get by for a season until sieloff, ramage, wotherspoon etc are ready. That said Smid is young enough he could be here when they are a playoff contender again, and as an asset carries some value. Back and forth on it.

Ignoring all the crap that went on, in the end, all I hear from Sportsnet is that Feaster and MacT consummated. Guess the courting went on for 3 months prior.

Very surprised by a lot of early reactions in this thread. All I could think when I found out who all was involved was, 'So the Oilers need big strong D and have a plethora of small forwards...seems like another brilliant Klown move!'

Absolutely think we stole Smid here and he's exactly the type of guy we needed. I love watching the Oilers screw themselves but when their arch-rival Flames directly benefit its just...priceless.

Calling it now, Smid injures RNH and gets the GWG next Saturday.

I like this trade. We get a solid d man who is tough as nails and loves to block shots. he should be able to step in and take some of the workload off our top d men. He's only 26 years old so he fits with the rebuuilding process.

Clearly Horak wasn't in the Flames plans and most likely had no future here. We have other good prospects at the center ice position so losing Horak isn't that big of a deal

Gilles seems to be the goaltender whom the Flames brass think will be our next number. Time will tell if Feaster did or didn't make a mistake by trading Brossoit.

Good job Feaster!

While there are still question marks around Brossoit making the NHL, the thing that scares me is his mental resilience that he has shown recently.

After getting snubbed for the WJC, his play dramatically improved.

After getting blown-out in his first AHL game, his play dramatically improved.

That kind of determination will be dangerous if he makes the NHL with the Oilers.

Still the trade does improve the Flames and to be frank Horak and Brossoit did their jobs as assets to help the Flames get better.

Any chance Burke and Lowe are secretly friends and the two meddling Presidents brokered this deal?

Seriously, I love this deal from an asset standpoint. I have never been sold on Horak, especially as a top 6 option. People were hoping he would amount to something mostly because he was part of the Erixon trade. I don't like the fact that we are giving up Brossoit as I like him the most among Flames' goaltending prospects (more than Gillies), but the fact is that he's a long way from developing into a #1 goalie in the NHL and there's a strong chance he might not get there.

In my mind, the Flames are getting a top 4 defenseman for what amounts to a goaltending prospect and a fringe bottom 6 player. That's a steal! With that said, this is likely not going to end up being a terrible deal for the Oilers. Smid is hardly a cornerstone player. The Oilers suck with Smid and will suck without him so this trade will really have little impact.

Brossoit has had 2 good games for the Aces sure, but it's not like he stood on his head. Believe it or not actually made more saves in that 9 goal against performance than he has in his 2 shutouts combined. Hell even Mark Guggenberger has a 1.80 GAA playing behind that Aces team. They are a very good defensive team that is not allowing a ton of shots and are allowing barely a goal against per game.

Despicable.. embarrassingly bad... for the Oilers! Is this desperation at trying to get a starter in net (Bryz - which is laughable in its' own right, but one that at least has some logic to it?) or are they really just tanking again?

Easy win for the Flames. There are no two-ways about it.

Not many other teams could take on Smid without sending $ the other way, so this was FINALLY a 'cap-rapage' that we all were waiting for.

Smid perfectly compliments the Flames' D. It is really tough to break up the first two pairings, but I think you almost have to.

Giordano - Brodie
Wideman - Smid
O'Brien/Butler - Russel

Gives a physical and more defensive D-man paired with a puck-mover. Balance.

Also, Flames got one of the only character guys off that team. Flames become harder to play against, Oilers become easier.

On the flipside, it isn't a total loss for the Oil (except signing Bryz! Still laughing!). Horak (though not big) is exactly the type of forward that the Oil need - a responsible two-way player that cares about defence. Brossoit also greatly increases the Oil's goalie prospect depth - I think he has solid potential, and has amazing athleticism. Definitely a couple holes that are a LITTLE bit more filled, but the odds of either of them being difference makers is low.

I feel sorry for Brossoit and Wotherspoon though - they were so pumped being drafted by the same team, as they were childhood friends and all. Always sucks, but that is life.

Feaster has done a very, very good job on this one. Roy MAY end up panning out - perhaps different coaching will help his development, but he will most likely just leave the organization in the spring.

You have to really be totally in love with Horak + Brossoit not to like this trade.

Oh, and of course... the Oilers make out like bandits. This goes a LONG way to assuring they are in a position to draft Ekblad. Win-Win?

This is about as close as you can get to getting something for nothing. There is no reason not to like this trade.

Like the deal, Feaster addressed a need and didn't give up a lot. Horak was good but expendable and Brossiot was the same with all the goalies in the system. Oilers lose arguably their best Dman...to us! Lol

Good job Feaster.

I think the Flames come off better in the deal (shouldn't the Oilers be acquiring defensemen, not trading them) but it's awfully amusing how quickly Horak and Brossoit's stock has dropped around here.

The only thing I don't like about this trade is it will make the Oilers suck harder - then they end up with another higher draft pick.
