Also, we can add the 22x bridge over macleod. I'm guessing their previous design didn't work and it looks like they're adding to it??

I think this was always in the pans for it. It was always marginally too narrow for four lanes

Yeah, the 22x/Deerfoot interchange was built as an intermediate design anticipating the ring road expansion.

And yes, if there are problems with the Glenmore bridge, it makes sense to keep the road closed.

As someone who is involved in inspections. If it doesn't meet spec and contractual requirements then it is a no go.

The company I work for is doing some of the welding inspections and there are still four bridges that do not have final inspection acceptance for meeting all required AWS D1.5 requirements.

Do concrete bridges have welds? I don't know anything about bridges. Just trying to narrow it down because I'm pretty sure there's only 7 steel bridges total (Glenmore, WB flyover at 88 St, SB-EB at 88 St, #1 WB-SB at DF 22X, and #1 and #2 NB-EB at DF 22X)... the rest of the bridges have concrete girders. Of those 7 bridges, traffic is already flowing on 6 of them.

I can't imagine Alberta Transportation would agree to open the road down to 22X, even partially...because then the contractor will probably try to say that they have met traffic availability and can wait until Spring to finish. A P3 contract can be great for the owner because delays like this are solely on the contractor unless the government asked for significant deviations from the contract during construction.

Acey: Concrete bridges will still have steel at places like the joints at abutments.

Southeast Calgary ring road woes continue as opening date remains in limbo

Officials says a necessary safety audit has begun on the southeast ring road, however they’re no closer to pinning down when the stretch of highway will open.
The safety audit began this week on the north-south portion running from 17 Ave. to Hwy. 22X S.E., said ministry of transportation spokeswoman Nancy Bealey Hosker, and a report is expected in the coming days.
A safety audit on the east-west portion — running from 84 St. S.E. to Deerfoot Tr. — is expected to start later this week, with a report likely coming sometime next week.
The independent safety auditor is hired by the contractor.
“They go look at the road and they identify any deficiencies and give their report to the contractor and to Alberta Transportation,” said Beasley Hosker.
“That will give us a better idea of what work needs to be done on this section.”
Beasley Hosker said any upgrades mandated by the safety audits should take “days” to fix.
However, there is “considerable” work still needed on the interchange at Deerfoot Tr. and Hwy. 22X, said Beasley Hosker, which could stall the project further.

Further Adventures in trying to do a temporary solution to get the ring open:

On top of the Peigan interchange, they put these barrels up several weeks ago, to absorb impacts into the end of the median concrete barrier. Today, they are removing them, and installing this kind of energy absorber:

Those water barrels in winter... Might as well be concrete.

They're still doing random stupid traffic control at Stoney and Deerfoot for no obvious reason. The night before last, I was excited on my drive home to find that two lanes on EB Stoney over top of Deerfoot and then under the WB-SB flyover had been opened, so that you didn't have to merge into traffic on EB Stoney so quickly after exiting from SB Deerfoot. Then, last night, all the pylons were moved again and the right lane was closed, with even less room to enter traffic than there was before, all with no evidence of any work on that part of Stoney that would support re-closing that lane right now.

Then, this morning, exiting WB Stoney on to NB Deerfoot, they've f'd that up again after having had a semi-decent solution for the last week or so of extending the right-most lane to make a reasonable merge for the traffic coming from both directions of Stoney. They've closed the right lane again and made it a yield. This morning when I left, the Mahoganites and Cranstonites were treating it as a stop and go alternating right-of-way when I got there instead of a yield. Again, there is no work evident on NB Deerfoot that would seem to justify shutting down the RH lane. (Although it is at least possible that they're going to be setting up to do some work later taday and just wanted to have it set up properly overnight, but I saw nothing going on at 7:30 that would support that idea)

Whoever is making those decisions needs to be fired and replaced with some with a bit of common sense.

I've asked their communications person about a couple of the silly things they've done there. She must be fed up with my incessant questions as she's no longer responding to my emails.

That road is a joke.

I hope this construction company doesn't get the SW road contract.

Can't believe its still not completed yet, what a joke. It was a gongshow getting out of Midnapore to East Bound Stoney and then onto Deerfoot

I hope Chinook gets fined HEAVILY for this debacle.

I drive 22x every day, and their road closure, lane closures, lack of signage, lack of flagmen, and apparent rush patchwork is comedic. I was on SB Deerfot going under 22X a few weeks back, and they had a LH lane that suddenly ended (blocked off with pylons) for no apparent reason. No signage, no warning, no change in lane paint. The guy in front of me almost sideswiped a semi, and there was already 3 trucks pulled over that had hit each other. I also had a haul truck pull out DIRECTLY in front of me on the off ramp from SB deerfoot to 22X. No signage, no flagman, nothing. The guy just drove across the road directly in front as I was taking the ramp.

It's ridiculous. Mud everywhere, improvised lanes, and pylons all over the place. Reminds me of China sometimes.

Well she's probably busy not updating the project update section of the website.

Exactly. I drive 22x almost everyday and this is exactly what ticks me off.
I think the road contractor has given up and expect they will be fined the max allowable late fee so are now just going through the motions

New update finally posted on their website. Doesn't say anything we don't already know. Awaiting audits, and work around Deerfoot/22X. http://www.sestproject.ca/construction-information

They're hoping for the 15th, but then say due to the weather forecast not likely...
