If there was any question that Rob Ford has been playing a game of "I think I'm smarter than you", I think this would end it. His aides didn't even know the announcement was coming yesterday.

Ford did not tell his staff that he would be making the bombshell announcement. Barnett was seen pacing alone in a hallway later in the day on Tuesday.

The only positive out of this situation is that it wasn't a sex tape.

The only way I could see that happening is if there were two crackheads on the tape... ugh.... just the logistics of that are disturbing.
Actually this could just be an innovate strategy to the Cut the Waist campaign. It is always good to have leaders that think outside the box.

Going off on drunken stupors, where you end up doing crazy things reminds me of Ralph Klein. It didn't harm his popularity amongst his constituents either.

I am far from a Ralph Klein supporter but I have a hard time comparing his actions to smoking crack with drug dealers and the rest of the circus that has gone along with Ford.

Yah, I didn't care for Ralph Klein's policies, but he was a genuine man of the people and his flaws were forgivable. Rob Ford is a rich kid who grew up into a drunk bully who hangs around with drug dealers. Not at all the same.

I'd also add Klein was a whole lot more likeable than Ford.

It may be a different, but there is a parallel. But I think Vulcan's big point is not whether it's the same thing or not, but the fact that it doesn't really hurt the base of these small government conservative types. And THAT is the scary part. But kinda goes to a lot of my points so far. A good majority of voters, especially in conservative camps, only care about their pocketbooks. Keep the taxes low and everything is completely fine. Even better if you piss off a few elitist latte sippers along the way.
These people would rather live with a crumbling city (or country) than ante up an extra 3% in taxes. Their lack of empathy towards others shows. Even with the mayor they claim to be behind. They profess they are helping him by telling others to get off his back, but if they really wanted to help him, they'd give him the tough love he needs and tell him to get some help. Which is ironic, because they love to tell that to people who don't have money or power, or can help them in any way.

I don't buy that Rob Ford's first crack experience was with gang members. That is a little extreme to just be something he stumbled into.
|
I think your really right, well not on the reserves piledriver thing. But its not like Ford had bought it on the street and quietly went home and burned his fingers 10 times on a crack pipe trying to figure it out.
It sounds like he had a pretty established network of people that helped enable him, and he clearly went to a party populated by these people.
You don't have to be thin to be smoking crack more then once.
Beyond the common questions of how far this goes in terms of conspiracy type stuff. The murder of one of the figures and the jailing of others, are the more basic questions for me.
Was there any undue influence or decisions effected by this tape. Did any city money go to these people. How much did his brother a city counceller know?
The right thing for Ford to do would be to step down, go get help and hopefully not run again, I think the conservative mayors base is fairly safe. For the cops not only is this a criminal investigation, but they're going to have to go through all of Rob Ford's transactions as mayor, and probe his connections.
Ford can't be mayor while this is happening.
But he's stubborn and pigheaded and loves the limelight, I would expect that there will be serious challenges to get him out of office right up to the courts. Unless he's removed in handcuffs.

Agreed CC. Already mentioned one of the guys in the photo was dead and one was in jail, and you gotta ask, what more is going on that we don't know about? Even if there isn't a connection, or criminal behaviour on Ford's part, just a bad decision in regards to company, based on the fact they've got the drugs he wants, you gotta think he's compromised. And if compromised, have decisions been made because of this issue? Have government monies or resources been used?
And another thought, that hasn't been touched on here to my knowledge, though I'm sure posters here have thought of it, just failed to mention it... what about the real possibility that dangerous people (rightly or wrongly) are angry with Ford as he seems to be the only one in the photo that isn't in trouble or dead? Will there be reprisals? Is he putting those around him, including the government, in danger?

Well it made him look bad since he was busy attacking the credibility of the Chief of Police just that very morning. And he looks bad because he had been telling everyone his brother was "the most honest politician in Canada".
I did notice that no where in there did he say he was shocked that Rob smoked crack. Everything was he was shocked that Rob confessed when he did.

I think it's his brother saying that he believed Rob when he denied using crack.
Course we all suspect Doug was in on the lie too, but it sounds like Doug is trying to 1. support his plausible denibility/ignorance, 2. continue supporting his brother.
He's basically saying he never knew, and Rob is still a good guy. Both of which I give about a 0.00001% chance of being true.
But you are right Bobblehead, he's not 'technically' saying that he had no knowledge of Rob smoking crack. He's sure letting us come to that conclusion though. Like how Robbie tried to twist the reporters questions around, 'you didn't ask me the right questions.' Actually at the time they had asked other ways, he just answered the ones he wanted to.
