Post New 20,000 seat Arena to open in Las Vegas in Spring 2016

I think it's only a matter of time before they are gunning hard for a NBA and NHL team...

Damnit, I just saw the "[News] New 20,000 seat Arena..." part and was hoping it was the Flames announcing it. Leaving disappointed.

This is the same arena that was announced last spring or winter. They now finally have renderings to show us. They are renovating the front of NYNY and Monte Carlo, as well as the space between the two resorts to be an "Entertainment district" that will lead to the arena.

They will do awesome and I am surprised it took so long. Even if they sell out 50% of games for any professional sports team, they will have so many events to fall back on.

First thing that comes to mind is Mayweather fighting twice a year (too late to use this)
UFC has a few shows every year in Vegas

If 75% of the fans there are cheering for the visiting team, what kind of experience is that for the natives?

Better than the experience in Phoenix or Long Island.

Las Vegas is a very transitory city to begin with. They deal with visitors in every aspect of their lives.

I don't think you would have such a number cheering for the visiting team. Tourists would be from all over and going to catch a game for entertainment. That said, entertainment outside of the games will be crucial to attract people over the hundreds of other events they can take in.

NHL should jump on this before the NBA does. I think a pro-sports franchise could do very well in Vegas... I imagine trip planners in Canada/Hockey Markets will jump at the opportunity to include hockey tickets in trip packages, Casino's will buy a lot of tickets to comp to their guests, etc. etc.

Even if the year-round fanbase only approximates the Yotes I think the tourism industry makes it so much more solvent.

I imagine they have done several surveys but I have to wonder how good of a sports town Vegas would be. If they could get a half decent season ticket holder base I think it could work as I imagine being located on the strip would get a lot of walk-up attendance.

I think it will be some time before either the NBA or NHL get there, if at all. All NBA situations look fairly solid - and expansion is not being discussed at all - the incoming commish has said as much. Also - I'd like to see any studies done that demonstrate that Vegas would be a different NHL situation than Phoenix. Maybe it is... but skeptical.

They should hire Rick Tocchet and Janet Jones as execs.

Could probably move the Panthers pretty easily no?

It's an interesting idea, Las Vegas having a pro sports team on the Strip.

They won't even need a dedicated fan base; there will be so many people (read: dudes) wanting to catch a live sports game in arms reach of their hotel, I bet the majority of seats will be tourists all the time.

I see nothing but win for this.

Having a new stadium and an NHL team would be absolutely dynamite for the Strip and could work very well for the NHL as well. I would definitely be making more trips back to Vegas if I knew I could catch some hockey while im there.

This is brilliant. I'd definitely attend games in Vegas.

That said, theres no way the Wranglers can bring in 20,000 people.....

If Vegas gets its own team, every team will play 1 or more games there. Yes, I get what you are saying, but I'd rather the Flames kept their 41 home games at the Dome, and then got to play a few games a year of their road schedule in Vegas.

Vegas vs. Phoenix is really apples and oranges. With the Strip right there, you can't really compare it to Scottsdale (or Glendale, I can't remember which is which).

Also, the NHL clearly has plans to expand IMO. They purposely set up two lopsided conferences. There are 2 more teams coming to the West.
