I mean I just...ugh...

Quote:
In one of the strangest cases of purported religious beliefs intersecting with athletic performance, a Kentucky junior cross country runner voluntarily walked away from a chance to qualify for the state meet to avoid running with the bib number "666", which she said conflicted with her Christian beliefs.

As reported in depth by Lexington NBC affiliate LEX18, Whitley County High (Whitley County, Kent.) cross country runner Codie Thacker voluntarily forfeited her spot in a regional championship race after her coach drew bib number 666 for the runner.

Thacker and her coach argued that she should be allowed to switch her number, but race officials refused the request.

Those officials would later deny that Thacker claimed she needed to change bib numbers for religious reasons, though the junior insists she was explicit about her motivation. To her, running with the number 666 on her chest would have signified a serious breach in her faith.

"I didn't want to risk my relationship with God and try to take that number," Thacker told LEX18. "I told them to mark out my name because it makes me sick just thinking that my name is associated with that number."

Stupid is as stupid does...

Her loss that she let a silly superstition ruin whatever chance she might have had to make the State finals (or what the hell ever).

Well, to be honest, I don't really have much problem with her wanting to change numbers, should be easy enough to do. However, it sounds like from the story she didn't make her desires known succinctly to the organizers.

It's within their right to refuse of course, just don't see how it's hard to swap two names around. You gotta think someone would have liked to have that number, haha.

But yeah, ultimately it's her own fault, and her own beliefs/superstitions slowing her down.

Doesn't really bother me though, compared to a lot of those other stories, some of which are pretty horrifying.

Ok so they switch her number to make her feel better... then some chinese runner doesn't want one with a 7 in it (or does want one with a 7 in it - I forget which is supposed to be lucky or unlucky), then some voodoo priestess wants a number with a 3 and a 9 in it, then some numerologist wants the number 52 because it is their weight divided by their IQ, then some Scientologist wants the number 3 because it is the OT level than Xenu was mentioned in, then some hippie wants 69 because, well that's awesome... then some Iginla fan wants 12 because they loves them some Jarmoe.... it goes on and on.

Bottom line is numbers are randomly computer generated and assigned. If you don't want to run because you don't like the number you were given, or the clouds make funny bunny faces at you, or the green of the grass is making you see elves everywhere, or your shoelaces are too pink... then don't run. Life is full of choices... make smart ones.

My municipality once changed a house street address for a Chinese family to remove the number 7 from the address.

So they bought the house, then fought to change the number.

Unbelievable.

Regarding Chinese numbers, four is unlucky, supposedly sounds similar to their word for death, and eight is lucky, similar to their word for prosperity. The Chinese Summer games started at 8 PM on 8.8.08. They make hockey players look rather logical in their superstitions, lol.

As for 7, that's a Western lucky number. Forget why.

Yeah, as I said, I agree, it's on her. And it's remarkably stupid and kinda self destructive. Just thought maybe there was a easy resolution there. But you are right, even if it didn't become a problem, it kinda sets a precedent for a road you don't wanna go down in the future.

Though I would think the clouds making bunny faces at you would be a good omen! Not a bad one...

Yeah, that's happening more and more in Western society. Already happens a lot in Hong Kong. Strangely enough the Communist government in China has outlawed practices like that, that are based in superstition in the rest of the country, (the larger practice of banning religion) they just couldn't switch Hong Kong back without really pissing people off.

As I mentioned just above, Chinese people are crazy superstitious (on average of course).

they are crazy. I know a Chinese girl who once loved a guy but her mom didn't let her marry him because he was born on a certain day in a certain year.

Could you imagine an extreme christian declining a $50 million dollar lottery ticket because their winning numbers had "666" in it?

Now that I'd like to see.

Though I'm not sure how that's possible in a pick six or seven type lottery that general has those big payouts. The numbers generally end around 50.

It could happen in those small triple digit lotteries, though, they (the Christians) would never pick that number.

Too bad someone who isn't nuts didn';t trade with her, and then go on to win the race, unless of course she was burned at the stake right after.

A Texas High School for some reason hired a Christian motivational speaker to give a presentation at the school on how to become "dateable."

Here's some of his advice...
Girls:
Quote:
“You are soft, you are gentle, you are a woman. Don’t try to be a guy. Guys like you because you are different from them. So let your girly-ness soar.”
“Dateable girls know how to shut up. They don’t monopolize the conversation.”
“God made guys as leaders. Dateable girls get that and let him do guy things, get a door, open a ketchup bottle. They relax and let guys be guys. Which means they don’t ask him out!!!“
Guys:
Quote:
“Dateable guys know they aren’t as sensitive as girls and that’s okay… Dateable guys are real men who aren’t afraid to be guys.”
“Dateable guys aren’t tamed. They don’t live by the rules of the opposite sex.”
“Dateable guys know that porn is bad for the spirit and the mind. They keep women covered up.”

Dateable guys know not to compensate for male pattern baldness by sticking cigarette butts to their scalp.

Well we talked about a lottery scenario involving 666. This lottery is about to go fully unclaimed and will expire. Is this our example? (full speculation of course)
