It really couldn't possibly hurt.
On the other hand, #### Heatley up his stupid ass.

If there is one person that could completely undermine a locker room, a team's work ethic and negatively influence younger players, it's Dany Heatley.

He's in a very select group of players that I would never ever ever want to see the Flames pick up.

Flames will not sign Heatley next off-season - not even on the cheap.

The only way they should acquire him is if the Wild get real desperate and throw in a very nice sweetener to eat the rest of this season's contract.

Flames will once again be looking to sign/trade for guys with fairly high motors, high hockey IQ, who have wheels, and who are more on the physical side of things. Guys who will be good in the dressing room.

I am not convinced at this point that Heatley is a decent bet as a reclamation asset. He is just too slow now - at everything. Aside from hailing from Calgary, there is nothing on Feaster's list that this guy matches.

If there is any old vet I would want to sign in the off-season with the idea of trading him for assets at the trade deadline, it would be Jagr. He is also a solid locker-room presence, provides leadership, and is a pretty safe bet that his regression will be slower because he still has incredibly high hockey IQ and wonderful hands. In his prime, he was fast (and hugely underrated in that area) but he didn't regress as much and as fast because of his other talents. Heatley has always been a one trick pony in my mind, and with the loss of speed and a center to feed him one-timers or other high-percentage shots, he just regressed. He just can't get open properly any longer, and doesn't seem to have the IQ to compensate for that.

Will be really interesting to see who the Flames end up trading away, what comes back, and what vets they sign. I think there are few 'untouchables' on this roster. Perhaps only three - Monahan, Baertschi and Brodie (yes, Baertschi even though he is getting scratched). Everyone else is fair game to be traded (though there are more than a few guys I hope they do not of course). This roster could be very, very different next season. Impossible to speculate at this time, especially with how the Flames are doing with respect to the standings.

Alex Steen ticks all of those boxes.

From what I've heard about his attitude, not sure I'd want him in the locker room. Carcinogenic. In that sense it could hurt

On a wing, top 6, MAD MONEY.

It's my money and my imagined team, I will spend it however I want thank you.

But seriously, I don't know. I think he's worth a look, could be good, could also be a total bust. We have to get to the cap floor some how, and if we're going to be trading folks for picks and prospects we're going to need free agency to give us a little juice. Heatley is high risk, high reward. Most likely terrible, but on a one year deal? Could be worse. It's not like there are oodles of options out there, and I'll always love his David Bowie vision.

It still shocks me that they didnt forfit their pick after losing in the cup final.

How much worse can a first round pick get than a 2012 29th overall pick?

2013 was expected to be a better draft and its pretty easy to admit your team probably wont make it to the finals in 2014 so why not forfit it in 2012?

They must have really liked Stefan Matteau...!?

Nice post though.
Disagree. The team that the OP projected looks to be considerably worse than this year's team, which isn't a .500 team to begin with, so I think the McDavid sweepstakes would be likely. Were it not for the existence of the Edmonton Oilers, that roster would be a lock for last place.

Hudler is still above a PPG and Monahan looks to be good for .5 PPG which is great. Russell is looking like the stud I saw in the WJC. Looks like he's acclimatized his game to the NHL and has been very effective in a top 4 role.

Whether you like it or not, these players have been and are continuing to get it done. Everyone is playing quite well which is both making some vets expendable and upping their trade value for future assets.

Lets stop with these downer posts and enjoy our exciting and promising hockey team.
Have you been watching over the past 10 games? Might pain you to notice that they have gone 3-7. Terrible teams have good starts every season, and that's what happened to the Flames this year. Flames likely finish bottom 3 the next 2 years and we will be better for it.

Thanks for identifying yourself as a 'fan' who only looks at the standings and doesn't watch the games.

The flames have kept all but 1 game close in the 3rd period. We have a chance to win every night which is all you can ask for with a young group as this missing key players since game 1.

I have watched EVERY game and been to most of the home games (pre-season included) so please use one other fact to support your argument then the standings you saw on NHL.com..

Okay sorry, a 1 game below .500 team which was a .500 team until yesterday. What a joke post.

Facts? You think by taking away out best LW and our best centre that the team will improve next year? Let's review that line-up, shall we?

1st Line LW has Baertschi, a guy that has regularly been benched/scratched this season and is currently on pace for 6 goals.

1st Line Centre is Monahan, a player that will be 20 years old. I think the kid has a bright future and he has done well playing sheltered minutes this season, but expecting him to take over the most important position on a hockey club and do well at it based on 15 games is pretty naive. Perhaps you live in a world where rookies only get better and sophomore slumps do not exist, but I do not.

1st Line RW would be Hudler, whom I like, but he is a streaky player whose best season saw him score 57 points. Bit of a reach to suggest that he becomes more than a decent 2nd liner. That is, of course, only my opinion, but it happens to be based on the 7 full NHL seasons that he has played, rather than just the 15 games that you seem to be basing yours on.

That above first line is likely the worst in the league. Throw in the fact that it probably gets dominated physically and you have to think that they would be in tough to help the team get anywhere near .500, let alone better.

I appreciate that you watch the games, but your opinion is clearly quite biased. Assuming that a team with 4 rookies and 6 sophomores is going to get better than what we have now boarders on delusions harboured only by Oiler fans. I am being realistic in my assessment. You clearly, are not.

Gio going down is a big reason why we are struggling right now.

Our defense is extremely thin after Gio, Brodie, Wideman and Russell.

O'Brien has been servicable as a 6th dman and Butler has looked better but niether one is a top 4 guy and only having 3 guys who are top-4 calibre is hurting us.

As much as it pains me to say we should probably trade Backlund for a dman. Playing him on the 4th line is not going to do anyone any good.

I would rather trade Stajan but Backlund is so inconsistent offensively he is going to have a tough time earning icetime over Monahan, Colborne and Stajan.

Monahan is a key center for us going forward and Colborne is going to be molded into a 3rd line center so giving them ice time makes sense. Therefore trading one of Stajan or Backlund seems like the only solution that doesnt involve relegating one of them to the 4th line.

I dont want to see Backs leave but if it was for a decent top-4 defensive prospect it seems to make sense for the organization.
