I'm one of the biggest Butler haters on this board but...
The last 3 games averaging +22 mins a night with 1 goal 1 assist?
Why is he playing better?
Granted a bad penalty in the 3rd in the Chicago game but still, I'm used to pointing out much worse things over a 3 game period with Butler..

I think that penalty was bogus to be honest... Toews grabbed onto him just as much as he was grabbing. It was a good battle that in my opinion never should have ended up with Butler in the box.

Definitely what I thought too... I hate when the refs let things go all game and then decide with 5 minutes left in a 2-1 game to buy a sell job like that. The Stajan penalty was a no brainer.

Butler actually plays steady often. The issue with him is that when he has a bad night, it is usually a VERY BAD night.
I actually think that his partnership with Brodie is really helping him. When playing with O'Brien he is forced to be the puckmover on the pairing and it leads to turnovers.
By playing with Brodie it allows Butler to just play, and Brodie takes care of more of the tough puck moving.

That's why you need guys like Butler on the team that can play 3rd pairing and fill in top 4 when required due to injuries. There's nothing remarkable about his game but he can be competent. He just needs to keep his game simple and not try and do too much.

Pairing him with Brodie has paid off. He's been pretty good but still tends to be weak on his stick and turns it over more than I like.

Butler isn't rushing like he was earlier in the year. It was almost like he was afraid of making mistakes, which caused him to make mistakes.
He's a lot more calm on the ice lately.

The defensive partner of a player is very under stated I think. Similar to how Hamrlik was Phaneuf's best partner in his career so far, Brodie has been a good partner for Butler. Like someone else stated, Butler's been able to calm down a bit with Brodie beside him.

Unfortunately for him he came back the other way when Regehr was traded. So he's always going to have that going against him from some, given Regehr was obviously the better D at the time and a fan favorite in Calgary to boot.
I know he was a bit out of his element playing top line minutes with Bouwmeister these past couple years. But I think it made him a better D man in the long run and we might be seeing it now that he's back getting top 4 minutes. He's had a bad giveaway or two this year but I still think he's a pretty reliable D more often than not.

I think it was a make-up call for the high stick Toews caught a few minutes earlier.

I think that's it exactly.
Butler has the tools to be a decent player but I find his biggest problem is the first pass. Playing with Brodie, who moves the puck well, takes that pressure off him.
Whatever it is, he has been really good since Giordano went down.
And so has Russell.

Like many have said Butler has looked better, and I think being with Brodie, Butler can play his game more.
Butler and O'Brien as a pairing it seemed like neither one wants the puck, and when they get it they just want to get rid of it as fast as possible cause they don't want to mess up.
Now, he can give the puck to Brodie, stay back and let the kid roll.
I think Smith with O'Brien are a good pair, cause Smith slows it down and is better with the puck so O'Brien can play a simpler game.
