Is he flying cargo?
How would you get him through the door to the passenger section?
Does he have to pay for four seats?
Those would be serious questions in this case. Sadly.

Thanks, Captain Obvious. I'm guessing this type of problem is one of those that creeps up on you and involves a variety of psychological issues.

How the hell does 1200 lbs "Creep up on you". Did the guy not notice that he weighed over 1000 lbs?
Seriously, you have to wonder what the hell is wrong with people who let this happen, and why exactly it is that he figures 1200 lbs is too heavy and he needs to loose some weight, but at 1000 he was still okay and could keep on doing what he was doing. This kind of thing disgusts me, because at some point the person said "To hell with it, I'm just gonna be tremendously fat". Why bother going for a walk when you weigh 300 lbs, when you can just wait untill you weigh 1200 and get free surger?

That picture looks smelly. When people cannot leave the bed like that, how do they bathe, let alone defecate?

Unfortunately, a lot of people who are grossly obese self medicate with food. i.e. Food is the only thing that makes them feel better. This often leads to a cyclical problem as depression can set in regarding the obesity and then they self medicate with more food.

The problem with a lot of psychological issues is that moments of clarity often do not occur until the person's life becomes unmanageable. With all of the psychological issues that could have resulted in morbid obesity (pathological compulsion, etc.) it is most likely that the gravity of the situation is not grasped until prevention isn't an option.

Unless the person subscribes to the Homer Simpson school of thought there is little chance that someone uses this kind of logic.

I don't think anyone *lets* that happen. Nobody wants to be grossly overweight. I imagine he felt there was nothing that could be done. Not everyone has control over appetite. More likely than not he has serious physiological and emtional problems.
Do you think one day he just decided to see how much he could eat and how fat he could get?
Do you seriously think he layed there in bed for 5 years getting fatter and muching on nachos all day and thought that was a perfectly acceptable life?

Well notoepik, yes I suppose I do. Why?
Because the fact of the matter is, the guy did lay there in bed for 5 years getting fatter and nunching on nachos all day. If this wasn't acceptable to him then he wouldn't have done it.
I don't argue that depression and several other factors may be the underlying problem, but the fact remains that this dude made a conscious choice to not prevent this. He hit 300 lbs and he kept eating, he it 500 lbs and he kept eating, he hit 1000 lbs and he kept eating, and now that he is probably gonna die, he decides he needs a change so he gets surgery. I realize that depression and many mental disorders are real problems and that these people self medicate with food, and it's not the derpession or the other problems that I can't stand, it is the not realizing that it is a problem untill you hit 1200 lbs. Is this dude suddenly not depressed? Have his problems suddenly cleard up? Or is he dying, so now he decides that doing nothing but laying in bed and eating 120000 calories a day is a bad idea.

I don't agree bbs, I think the guy had no control over his eating. I doubt he suddenly realized he was fat. How did he get all that food anyway?
Some people have no control over a lot of things that happen to them mentally and physically. Eating until you look like 5 baby elephants is one of them. Sadly.

Uribe's case puzzles doctors since his cholesterol and blood-sugar levels are normal, despite his extreme obesity.

It doesn't sound like he is dying, from the article it sounds like he is begging for help with his condition.

Okay, fine, he's begging for help, but why now? Why not when he was 500 lbs, why didn't he go for a walk when he was 500 lbs?
And don't give me the whole "He's not in controll of his eating" bit. He made a conscious choice to eat.
What's that? You're still hungry? Yeah, being 1000lbs will do that to you, but perhaps heating 4 pizzas is a bad way to fix that problem, maybe being hungry when you weigh 1000lbs is a good thing. Fine, here's your pizzas.
No one shoved the food down his throught, and sure someone gave him the food, but he's the one that stuffed it down his gullet.
It always amazes me when you see people like this and they invariably bust out the "I can't help it, I'm always hungry" and that may be true, as there is a disease that causes you to think you're always hungry, but you know what? These are the same people who probably eat the most unhealthy food in the world.
I saw a program on TLC about that condition and what were they all eating? Fast food, and junk food.
If you're hungry all the time, why not eat vegtables or fruit all the time instead of pizza and cupcakes?
If it's depression, you're making a conscious choice to not seek help and to stuff your face.
If its an eating disorder, you're making a conscious choice to eat crap instead of trying to fill up on things that are healthy.
If this dude is the exceptin who got fat while eating celery and running 5 miles a day then fine, I'm wrong, but I'd be willing to bet his daily meals resembled the McDonalds menu, and his only exercise was being helped to the toilet.

Why did the drug addict keep using? They had to know it was perfectly unhealthy for them? Why are they asking for help now that they have a $1500/day habit? Why not ask for help at $300/day?
Why does the alcoholic keep boozing it up? They had to know it was perfectly unhealthy for them? Why are they asking for help now that they down a 40 of vodka a day? Why didn't they join AA when they were downing a dozen beer?
Why does that guy keep gambling away his money? Why is he asking for help now that he's gambled away his kids college money and his house? He had to know he was in trouble when he had to sell his car to fund his bank roll.
Why is that chic begging for help now that she's 70lbs of skin and bones? Why not when she was 90lbs?
Why is that steriod freak asking for help now that he has heart trouble? Why wasn't he asking for help when he blew up his bicep? He had to know this wasn't healthy.
Why did that person declare bankrupcy? They had to know the credit card debt wasn't going to go away. Why did they keep buying things and not cut up their cards before they had to declare bankrupcy?
It always amazes me when you see people like this and they invariably bust out the "I can't help it, I always: need a fix/need a drink/have to gamble//need to lose more weight/need to bulk up/need new shoes."
All of these people have an addiction and all of them will not accept help until they hit a certain point. You can't look down on this guy for his addiction any more than you can anyone else who has a different addiction.
And it's not fair to think you're all perfect and superior to these people just because you don't feel you have an addiction.

Yeah, I never said I didn't hold this guy in the same light as the alcoholic, drug addict, or smoker. They all disgust me because they are all conscious choices to basically ruin your life.
I absolutely commend those that have gotten out of addictions and for the most part it does take hitting rock bottom and it takes a lot of work on their part, so great for them.
I suppose where I see eating as being different is two fold.
1) being this fat to me is in a large part due to lazyness, you eat and eat and eat but don't go do anything else. Does a heroin addict have the ability to work it off? No. But someone who eats a dozen donuts can go outside and run it off. You do too much of one and too little of the other and you get like this dude.
2) If you're hungry all the time, why eat such crap? If a big fat guy is depressed he can eat an apple, but a heroin addict doesn't have a healthy alternative to heroin.
The fat thing really bothers me because for the most part I see it as vicious cycle, you're depressed you eat, you eat you're fat, your fat you get depressed, not much different form other addictions I suppose, but I'd be willing to bet that a large percentage of dudes this size didn't start out depressed, they started out eating doritos and watching tv, then they got fat, and then they got depressed, and there goes the problem.
In a lot of cases the problem that causes the addiction is brought on by first overdoing the act that becomes the addiction (ie the addiction creates itself, and that was your own choice). But I'd also wager, that other addictions such as booze and drugs are brought on for the most part by problems that have nothing to do with the addictive act.

Some people, rather than being alcoholics or gambling addcits, have a flaw where they have no sympathy and lack the ability to put themselves into other people's position...

As someone who 'ballooned' up by over 80lbs, the first 40 did sneak up on me. Mind you, those were pounds I could have used anyways as I was rather underweight at 5'8" and 120lbs. However, try as I might, I couldn't stop the other 40 from jumping on board too. Many reasons for it, and I'm not making excuses as I certainly could have been more active and not used food to get me out of the depressions I've been in and out of, but sometimes, it does sneak up on a person.
However, I think I may have it all under control now, and I'm shrinking again, but man! Sometimes it's just so self-defeating when you work out all week and step on the scale and see you've gained 3 lbs!
