Default Smallest crowd of the year? 7401 in Glendale last night

It seems every year there's one attendance figure that stands out from the rest for some reason. I remember one year St. Louis had about 6000, another year Chicago announced 5500, I believe.

I wonder if this is going to be that anomaly this year, or is this something we could see regularly in Arizona? I'm not trying to bash the fanbase, as I know that gets annoying on CP, but more so I'm just surprised as I thought the general feeling down there was that the fans were rejuvenated after securing a minimum five more years.

I know they'll likely never have regular sellouts, but I thought they'd go from 10-12k being the announced attendance norm, to somewhere closer to 14-15k a night.

Can anyone give an indication of the mood in Arizona towards hockey? Is there renewed interest in the team, or is that something that the media just kind of threw out there, thinking it would happen?

Maybe if the Coyotes didn't play the most boring style of hockey in NHL history, they might have a chance.

This.

As a sports fan in general I love going to games, even if it isn't my team (I live in Vancouver and even go see the Canucks), however I wouldn't spend $10 going to see the Yotes play. All the marketing they did in the preseason was worthless.

They played Nashville. They didn't have 6000 Canadian travellers to top up the crowd.

1 night earlier in Phoenix there were only 10,452 fans (61% capacity). That is terrible. People just don't care about hockey in that market.

That's the problem, they shouldn't have to rely on that. They should have their own fans willing to support the team.

They should have given away free tickets to kids in costumes and did trick or treating on the concourse.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that hockey isn't really big with the hispanic culture.

The odd thing is, the smallest announced crowd of the year is larger than the season ticket base in any city. So what's the current season ticket base?

You wouldn't spend $10 to see not just the Coyotes play, but the NHL team that is playing the Coyotes that night? Yet you pay $$$ to go see the Canucks play?

I don't know, I watched parts of a couple of Coyotes games this year with the Centre Ice preview. Both times it was pretty unbearable. They suck the life right out of hockey.

Quite nice actually. And it certainly has a lot to do with our hockey team's attendance....

Although I will say, watching the clip of Smith scoring, there defintiely seemed to be a lot of people in the stands. Or at least they were very loud and taking up the bottom part of the dome.

I wonder if it's a coincidence that New Jersey and the Coyotes both play boring hockey and they are also the two teams with big financial troubles.

It's like no one realizes that if the game's not fun to watch, people won't watch the game!

Watched two Coyotes games this year and they just need to put a better product on the ice.

I understand that Dave Tippett helps win games but that style of play is just doing nothing to help them attract fans.

They also need a better "name" to help attract fans. Doan is a good player, but he's not really a guy that you want to go watch play. They need another Roenick to help them attract more fans to the games.
